A lot has happened since last we caught up with Fred Thomas (in a backyard in Austin, TX). In the two years since then, he quit his day job, got married, moved to Canada, and made a fantastic new album full of his trademark indie folk troubadour-style pop songs, full of hope and brutal honesty. Fred’s musical resumé is impressive, from fronting the lush pop of Saturday Looks Good To Me to playing with and producing bands like Tyvek. He dropped by Serious Business Music in DUMBO to share an intimate solo performance for this session. Changer, by Fred Thomas, is available now from Polyvinyl Records.
Nana Grizol is an indie folk band based in Athens, Georgia, fronted by Theo Hilton, and featuring a sort of who’s who of various Elephant 6-associated bands (Elf Power, Neutral Milk Hotel, The Music Tapes, etc). Their catchy, earnest songs ride the line between folk-punk and indie rock with often playful synths and horns, all tied together by bouncy rhythms underscoring Hilton’s heart-on-the-sleeve honesty. They joined us at Serious Business Music in DUMBO to share some music from their first full length release in 7 years. Love It Love It is available now from Orange Twin Record Company.
Living Body is the latest project of Jeff T. Smith (previously of Juffage) - a Leeds-based musician originally from Chicago. The experimental pop group began with a “Sonic Cauldron” concert at Left Bank Leeds in 2013, where Smith assembled a group of musicians to collaborate for the event (including Katie Harkin from Sky Larkin and Tom Evans from Vessels), ultimately leading to future collaboration and the evolution of Living Body as a proper band. The live group for their recent US tour took the form of a trio, featuring Alice Rowan handling many of the vocal and electronic drumming duties. The band stopped by Serious Business Music in DUMBO, Brooklyn to give us our first taste of how they make it all happen live. Body Is Working, the debut LP by Living Body, is available now.
Closeness is the new duo of Todd Fink (The Faint) and Orenda Fink (Azure Ray), who were married for a decade before starting a project of their own together. With a lush electronic landscape and distinct, effect-heavy vocals, the duo blend rock and pop with an approach that draws on the familiar styles of their previous work in a fresh way. Personality Therapy by CLOSENESS is available now from Graveface Records.
Desert Mountain Tribe (or DMT? Coincidence? We think not!) is a groovy psychedelic rock band from London. Big guitars, groovy drums, and heavy bass support the epic vocals, all up to their eyeballs in reverb. The band dropped by Serious Business Music in DUMBO, Brooklyn on their recent SXSW-anchored tour of the U.S. to get trippy for this session. Desert Mountain Tribe’s EP, If you don't know Can you don't know Köln, is available now.
Over the past decade or so, the Los Angeles-based Blake Hazard has gone from playing on the streets of New York City to the successful duo The Submarines and now on to her current solo project. Blake’s songs work beautifully in the context of a minimalist setup with just voice and guitar, but also lend themselves to huge pop production, which you can hear some of in the series of remixes being release this year. Here, she stopped by Serious Business Music in DUMBO solo for this intimate session! The Styrofoam remix of “Hey” is out now, with more singles and remixes coming throughout 2017.
The Gift is an alternative rock band from Portugal who recently celebrated their second decade of music-making. On their latest release, their distinct sound is honed by the production and co-writing magic of the legendary Brian Eno, with singer Sónia Tavares’ distinct vocals as an impressive focal point. The group dropped by Serious Business Music in DUMBO, Brooklyn, during their recent U.S. tour to give us this taste of that collaboration, and what to expect from their new record. Altar by The Gift will be released digitally on April 7th, and on CD/vinyl May 5.
Skout is Laura Valk and Connor Gladney -- a duo that have found the sweet spot between folk and pop that’s often called indie-folk. They combine gripping, catchy melodies and sweet pop harmonies, which just works so perfectly for their style of songwriting and singing. The Brooklyn-based band recently joined us at Serious Business Music in DUMBO for this refreshing session. Just Words by Skout is available now.
