Between 2002 and 2008  filmmaker Ben Shapiro followed photographer Gregory Crewdson, documenting his film-sized photo productions in Western Massachusetts. In his new documentary Gregory Crewdson Brief Encounters Shapiro takes us behind the scenes on Crewdson’s obsessively constructed sets and inside the artist’s creative process.

This week on Art Uncovered Ben Shapiro talks about the making of his new documentary, the psychology that inspires Gregory Crewdson’s images, and how some of photography’s most ambitious large-scale images come together. Gregory Crewdson Brief Encounters opens at Film Forum in New York City on October 31st. For other screenings, visit the film’s website.
