Diamond Head is the new show and collaboration by artists Johannes De Young and  Natalie Westbrook. The show takes it’s name from a famous Hawaiian volcano whose mineral deposits were mistaken for diamonds by British explorers in the 19th century.

For their show,  Natalie and Johannes bring to life an imaginary tropical island of their own. Using collage, animated video, and sound, we become tourists and explorers of a fictional Diamond Head. In the show, we experience this strange place through the eyes of a bearded beach bum and the voice of the island itself.

Johannes and Natalie each have their own distinct bodies of work, but in Diamond Head they seamlessly bring together the aesthetic sensibilities and themes that their work shares. Both artists are fond of depicting the strangeness of the natural world and exploring different states of the human mind. They do so in the kinds of tropical and psychedelic color palates you mind find a cartoon or on the box of a children’s breakfast cereal.

Last week, I met up with Natalie and Johannes at Interstate Projects in Bushwick where Diamond Head is on view through April 28th. We talked about their interest in Hawaii, the helicopter ride that resulted in one of the show’s video works, and the music and writing that inspired the exhibition.
