Over the last decade Gregory Crewdson has become a household name in contemporary art for his large-scale staged photographs. The creation of just one Crewdson photograph requires the work of over 50 crew members including actors, electricians, set designers and a cinematographer. The artist shoots on location in sleepy towns in Western Massachewsettes, often shutting down entire city blocks to use as his set.
In Gregory Crewdson: Brief Encounters, this week’s guest, filmmaker Ben Shapiro, takes us behind the scenes and onto the sets and soundstages of Crewdson’s most ambitious photography project to date. Shapiro’s documentary, Gregory Crewdson: Brief Encounters, is a fascinating look at the artist’s process and provides insights into what inspires Crewdson to go to such great lengths to create his own world through photographs.
Shapiro’s film is now available on Netflix and Amazon.
