Joined here by Craig Schenker on saxophone and with an overhead projector on-hand for some appropriate visual aids, Big Bend brings their expansive, amorphous sound to Serious Business Music in Brooklyn. Radish by Big Bend is available now. Listen to the audio podcast for more music and interview.

Shadow Monster is the Bushwick, Brooklyn-based duo of Gillian Visco and John Swanson who play a potent sort of grunge-inflected indie rock. With heavy lyrical themes dealing with loss, depression, and isolation, there’s a tension just under the surface of their music that explodes into a cathartic big-riffed, hair-whipping frenzy. The band dropped by Serious Business Music to give us a taste of their awesomeness in this session. Punching Bag is out now from Dadstache Records. NYC band Activity is a supergroup of sorts, with Travis Johnson, Steve Levine, Zoë Browne, and Jess Rees coming from the excellent bands Grooms, Field Mouse, and Russian Baths. This particular combination ties together some of the best and darkest elements of those groups in a caustic blend of equal parts nervous breakdown and blissful catharsis. Ahead of their release, the band dropped by Serious Business Music in Brooklyn to give us a taste of their music. Unmask Whoever, the debut album from Activity, will be release March 27, 2020 by Western Vinyl. Listen to the audio podcast for more music and interview.

The core of LA indie/alt band Momma is dual guitarist/vocalists Etta Friedman and Allegra Weingarten. Listen to the audio podcast for more music and interview.

Their powerful blend of guitar and voice uses a strong sense of melody and pop structure, making for a refreshing mix of British soul and Americana. The duo stopped by while on tour with Greta Van Fleet to share this intimate look at their tunes with us at Serious Business Music in Brooklyn. The “Stairway to Heaven” plagiarism case ends with Zeppelin exonerated for the one musical theft they didn’t commit.
ESSi is a Brooklyn-based duo with a deceptively huge sound. Using a smart blend of noise and hooky post-punk to achieve mind-melting dynamics, Jessica Ackerley and Rick Daniel draw equally from ambient experimental music and pop as they do from the more unlistenable far reaches of skronk (though, thankfully, there’s a satisfyingly steady dose of that in the mix as well to shake things up). Their music rides the dark line between groove and caustic disorientation, in a way that’s welcome for its willingness to truly experiment with what can go into a song. The band dropped by Serious Business Music in Brooklyn for this super exciting session! Vital Creatures is available now from Ramp Local. Listen to the audio podcast for more music and interview.

Pom Pom Squad is the brainchild of musical force Mia Berrin. While the band’s name and imagery might evoke something fun and light, the reality is far darker and much, much heavier. The band brought their massive energy to Serious Business Music in Brooklyn for this session. Pom Pom Squad’s debut album, Ow, is available now. ing is an experimental rock band from Richmond, VA comprised of Hannah, Will, and Garen. Employing the distinct - and sonically unusual for a band playing any sort of rock music - technique of playing only single notes and not chords, the band has a unique sound and feel, more akin to jazz or progressive, technical music than rock n’ roll, even though their structures ten to follow a somewhat traditional pop template. Jelly Kelly began life as a side project for Monogold frontman Keith Kelly, but quickly grew into its own beast. With a similar musical tendency (the presence of Monogold powerhouse drummer Jared Apuzzo - rototoms and all - probably helps with that) but a different angle that sees Kelly’s vocals opening up for a more full-throated delivery than that falsetto we’ve come to know and love over the years, Jelly Kelly is a young band full of experienced players (Nicolas Dube, Dom Bodo round out the quartet) having fun making weird sounds. The effect is an effortless, cool, catchy blend of post-punky hook-ridden indie rock that doesn’t want to fit neatly in any genre, and we’re here for it. The band dropped by Serious Business Music in Brooklyn to give us a taste of their brand new music. Fresh Paint by Jelly Kelly is available now. Listen to the audio podcast for more music and interview.
In the mix today you'll hear new music from Grand Canyon a 6-piece out of Los Angeles. Also, new tunes from Praises. Old favorites in there as well and a BTR Top 10 remix.
The first interview of the new decade is with indie rocker Erin Anne!
Onesie is the Brooklyn power pop band based around the songwriting of Ben Haberland, along with Zack Fanelli, Lee Madaus, and Andrew Nelson. With heavy nods to British invasion, power pop, and 90’s alt-rock, Haberland embraces everything great about catchy guitar rock and melody in his songwriting. The band dropped by Serious Business Music in Brooklyn to shred for us in this session. Umpteenth is available now from Dadstache Records. Listen to the audio podcast for more music and interview.
The indie-rock goddess wasn’t always this bold—she used to think she sucked.

Check out the dark & rockin' tunes of our top musician this week.
Special guest, Music Director Lottie, is back again to join us and to ring in the new year with our first new music episode of 2020! We check out new tunes from Yumi Zouma, Gladie, Praises, Aoife Nessa Frances, and YlangYlang, but for some reason do quite a bit of talking about Angel Olsen, Eleanor Friedberger, and a band whose music video we watched today and hated, but refuse to name. It's a real hot start to the year.
The Listening Booth has high energy electro alt from Flamingods, alt w/Jay Som amid her world tour, & folk w/2020 SXSW performer Boy Scouts!
Back at it in 2020 and Emily has her ears set on Grand Canyon. The group out of Los Angeles dropped their Yesterday's News EP in August and you'll get to hear a few tracks from it in the mix today.
The music made by Brooklyn band Kissed By An Animal is a perfect sonic parallel to musical mastermind and illustrator Dima Drjuchin’s visual aesthetic - bright, colorful, bold, and often, totally tripped out. With everything from psychedelic riff-loving wailfests to 00’s-esque sweaty dance party vibes, the band rolls along through the many genres at their disposal to great effect. They brought the party to the live room at Serious Business Music in Brooklyn to give us a taste of their world. Kissed By An Animals’ self-titled debut is available now. Listen to the audio podcast for more music and interview.
Rounder Records is an independent Nashville, TN-based label specializing all types of roots music. Why not play punk they way it’s supposed to be played—with zero f*cks.
Dawn in the new year w/ the final part of THE TOP SONGS of 2019—the only good thing to come out of this year.
Field Mouse have been a favorite band here at BTRtoday for several years now - while much has changed for the band (members, cities, styles of music) what’s still maintained all this time is the massively enjoyable musical chemistry stemming from Rachel Browne’s sweet vocals and Andrew Futral’s wily guitar antics. The addition of Zoe Browne on vocals adds a layer of perfect harmonies that only siblings can produce in just that way, rounded out by a super tight rhythm section, the band is operating to its full potential these days, with perfectly hooky, emotional songs that we just can’t get enough of. They joined us at Serious Business Music in Brooklyn for this session. Meaning by Field Mouse is available now from Topshelf Records. Listen to the audio podcast for more music and interview.
We're stoked for all the new music on the the horizon in 2020 but holding on to some of our favorites from 2019. You'll hear them in the mix today.
It’s been a few years since Pittsburgh songwriter Brooke Annibale stopped by our studio for a session. In that time, her sound has continued to grow and evolve - holding onto that timeless quality we’ve always loved while introducing some fresh elements to keep things exciting.

2019 brought this all-female music mix so many incredible albums. In today's show, we'll play you all the ones that didn't make Emily's 'best of' list but that she really had a hard time leaving out. Munya, Mariya May and Eerie Wanda are all in the mix.
Pocket Protector began as the solo project of Brooklyn indie scene veteran Joe Reichel (Howth, Robot Princess, MiniBoone) before the addition of drummer (and Brooklyn Drum Collective creator) Carlo Minchillo and bassist/photographer Mike Petzinger (of Meansiders). Reichel’s hooky, melodic songs and honest lyrics take the best of punk and indie rock to make for a catchy good time.
Greg Jamie of the band Blood Warrior (also of O'Death) joins us for a conversation about the band's new album, Animal Hides.
Playing some of the best albums, artists and tracks from 2019
Ali Awan is a Philadelphia-based songwriter/producer with a knack for timeless, catchy hooks, regardless of whatever genre he happens to be dipping into. From rock n’ roll to soulful folk, Awan’s sonic shapeshifting is effortless and works beautifully. He brought the live band down to Serious Business Music in Brooklyn to share a few tunes with us in this session. Butterfly by Ali Awan is available now. Listen to the audio podcast for more music and interview.
