Today’s episode is a momentous one! Not only are we celebrating the one year anniversary of The Music Digest, we’re also lamenting the departure of DJ Margaret, who will unfortunately be leaving BTR and the podcast. BUT! This show is a good one – we all showcase our three favorite artists or tracks that we were exposed to during our year-long run. Artists that we wouldn’t have heard of or listened to had it not been for the show. And, no worries! Pat and Matt will be carrying on The Music Digest torch and opening a new great chapter in the show’s legacy.

Time to jam to some alt-country tunes this Sunday on BTR!
Today we review the most recent album from Holly Golightly and the Brokeoffs, All Her Fault, which was released April 4th on Transdreamer Records. This is the 6th album Holly Golightly has released under this moniker, but she has put out over 20 LPs, collectively with different bands and as a solo artist. This particular album is very iconic country rock, with witty lyrics, and lots of washboard. Think gritty knock-your-teeth-out honky tonk swagger. Enjoy.

Today we talk about the latest LP from Philadelphia based band The War on Drugs. Lost in the Dream, released on March 18th by Secretly Canadian, is the first album from the group since 2011’s Slave Ambient. Melding grassroots American indie rock, psychedelia, and shoegaze, this timeless record offers a lot of good grooves in the vein of Bruce Springsteen, Bob Dylan, Sting, and ‘80s production in general. It is very referential, but does transcend those influences at points through compelling chord changes and interesting song structures. Definitely worth checking out.
Welcoming legendary Boston artist Bim Skala Bim! Plus, taking your requests with tunes from Kyle Hollingsworth and new music from Spiritual Rez, The Motet and Rob Drabkin.
Time for the ladies to take the stage!
Though a short album, Shipa Ray’s It’s All Self Fellatio EP, released on October 21st, covers lots of ground in it’s four tracks. Her velvet voice, full of expression, ties together musical shifts as the instrumentation touches upon several different genres including blues, motown, punk, and indie rock. The EP came about as a request from Nick Cave, who she toured with last year. He recognized her talent and so do we. Tune in to hear more.
By request, a special feature on Boston’s Spiritual Rez. Plus, introducing Chris Weaver Band!
The Alt-Country Hour on BTR!
It had been 44 years since psych folk artist Linda Perhacs released an album. But the inspiration she drew from nature and the cult following devoted to her first LP, awakened her inclination for songwriting. Released on March 4th by Asthmatic Kitty Records, The Soul Of All Natural Things, revisits Perhacs’ 70s era new age tendencies and couples them with modern production. The album is an exploration of beautiful tones, the elements of the universe, and 70-year-old Perhacs’ spiritual worldview.
You’ve just tuned into Spotlight on the City. For the month, I’ll be featuring Bellingham, Washington.

Today we review the fourth mixtape from 18-year-old up-and-comer Tink. Self-released on January 10th, Winter’s Diary 2 exhibits a maturity and songwriting ability that’s rare in someone so young. It’s an intimate return to her vulnerable R&B tendencies and showcases smooth nostalgic 90s style. A versatile performer, Tink has proven she’s both comfortable and great at singing, rapping, and songwriting. She’s definitely one of the many talents coming out of Chicago to note.
Checking out the 2014 line ups for Bonnaroo and moe.down. We’re also giving away a Slightly Stoopid prize pack – just tweet #BTRJamSession to enter to win!
Today we review BUM, the third LP from the French band Cheveu. The album, released February 6th by Born Bad, is a bit of a musical rollercoaster. The band takes everything with a grain of salt, adding a good dose of humor to an eclectic mix of different genres. Musically proficient, Cheveu offers a slew of surprises, great grooves, and a large collection of variations on rock, synth-punk, and more. This band is not to be categorized in any certain way; they’re definitely unique. Tune in for more.
Phish bassist Mike Gordon has a new record coming out tomorrow! We’re celebrating with fellow Phish member Page McConnell, plus news on the Electric Forest Festival.
This is your all-female music mix on BTR!
Today we review the sophomore LP from Angel Olsen, Burn Your Fire For No Witness, which came out on February 18th through Jagjaguwar records. It is her first release with a full backing band and it’s obvious her sound has progressed into territory much edgier than her folk singer-songwriter roots. The album is sonically pleasing, full of twang, candor, vulnerability, and aggression. It’s explorative and promising, it should interesting to see how the full band’s sound continues to develop.

Ready… set… Alt-Country Hour on BTR!
Today we discuss shine, the January 21st release from sample master Asano Ryuhei, who creates under the moniker lee. It is a 22-track LP that pulls samples from an array of nostalgic genres. The beats are chill, warm, and skillfully arranged. Surprises are scattered throughout the album as lee seamlessly shifts from dub samples to a soul samples to rock samples and back, with tonal accents tying everything together. Definitely a worthwhile listen.
Spotlight on Belfast, Northern Ireland.

Time for the ladies to take the stage!
Today we talk about the new old album, Boom Pow Awesome Wow, from the circa 2003-2004 band The Traps. John Dwyer toured with The Traps when they were still together. He recently salvaged old demo CDrs and cassettes to put together this LP, which he released on January 18th via his label Castle Face. The Providence band long broke up, but their hard-hitting, loud and aggressive take on garage rock lives on through this release.
Checking out the new album from The Motet this week. Plus, touring news from RAQ who’s finally back!
Sharon Jones and The Dap-Kings’ newest LP, Give the People What They Want, which was released on January 14th by Daptone Records, displays the 11-piece group’s musical prowess. The album touches upon funk, soul, pop, and a variety of different ‘60s and ‘70s reference points. As always, the music is a pleasant, catchy, well-produced offer from the talented ensemble.
Introducing reggae artist The Mighty Mystic and blues artist JP Blues to Jam Session! Plus, tunes from the new albums by American Babies and North Mississippi Allstars.
Time for the ladies to take the stage!
Today we review the debut album, This Hopeful, from the Brooklyn band Zula. The 9-song collection, released by Inflated records on October 29th, provides a modern take on psychedelic pop. Fuzz-infused composition laced with electronic nuances create textures that develop a hazy, pleasant soundscape. It’s somehow simultaneously accessible and experimental.
News this week on Wakarusa and Hoopla in the Hills festivals. Plus, Marco Benevento is back on tour and planning a new album with vocals!

Time to revert back to our solid show format – reacting to new albums after about a week’s worth of “digestion.” The EP we’re discussing today is Destroyer’s album Five Spanish Songs, which came out via Merge on November 26th. The five song release is actually covers of the Spanish singer Antonio Luque and his band Señor Chinarro. Dan Bejar wanted to have fun in the studio, make something instantly gratifying, and sing in Spanish. This was the result.
Starting off 2014 with some relaxing tunes from STS9, Dangermuffin, State Radio and Rob Drabkin. Then we pick it up with some fun live jams from Roots of Creation and Toubab Krewe!
