Jessica Jalbert is a Canadian musician based in Edmonton, Alberta, and the driving force behind Faith Healer. Useless Smile is available now from Shrimper Records.

In this episode, we’re focused on artists playing shows around NYC in the weeks after October 11. The Duke Of Surl is kicking off a tour. And Robot Princess the next, Cults is at Music Hall of Williamsburg in support of an excellent new album, and Katie Von Schleicher, Caroline Says, and gobbinjr join forces at Union Pool.
Normally we’d write some sort of semi-thoughtful description of the band here, but in this case we’ll let their Facebook bio do the heavy lifting: “sad13 (sad thirteen) is a cyborg dog astrally projected from the recent past to save the middle school dance. sadie dupuis is sad13.” That tells you pretty much everything you need to know. Also, they’re pop songs -- just as sweet, sugary, and satisfying as the stuff you heard on the radio growing up, but much less terrible in the sense that they’re written in a way that takes on the negative portrayals of women we’ve grown way too accustomed to hearing and turns it on its head. We’d expect nothing less of Speedy Ortiz’s Sadie Dupuis, who’s earned a reputation as one of the best songwriters around these days. She brought the band by Serious Business Music in DUMBO, Brooklyn, to share some tunes. Sad13’s Slugger is available now on Carpark Records. Listen to the audio podcast for more music and interview.
They have a song about needing a burrito and drugs, and it’s beautiful.

Facebook user Jason Lee probably said it best. “Christ on a crotchrocket, please don’t let that linger any longer.”
The Yeah Yeah Yeahs are amazing—but this new song is more like No No No.
gobbinjr (lowercase, despite what autocorrect will tell you) is the musical project of Madison, Wisconsin-native-but-currently-NYC-livin’ songwriter, Emma Witmer. Facebook says that her middle name is Jerk, but we don’t think it is. We also don’t really think she’s a jerk, even when her songs get kind of mean. How much of a jerk can you be if you name your band after your first bong? Exactly. Witmer’s music -- recorded on her own -- is pretty personal, but live she’s got a whole band to give the songs that extra energy, and they stopped by Serious Business Music in DUMBO, Brooklyn, to play for us. Vom Night and Shea Forever are available now. Listen to the audio podcast for more music and interview.

Nana Grizol is an indie folk band based in Athens, Georgia, fronted by Theo Hilton, and featuring a sort of who’s who of various Elephant 6-associated bands (Elf Power, Neutral Milk Hotel, The Music Tapes, etc). Their catchy, earnest songs ride the line between folk-punk and indie rock with often playful synths and horns, all tied together by bouncy rhythms underscoring Hilton’s heart-on-the-sleeve honesty. The experimental pop group began with a “Sonic Cauldron” concert at Left Bank Leeds in 2013, where Smith assembled a group of musicians to collaborate for the event (including Katie Harkin from Sky Larkin and Tom Evans from Vessels), ultimately leading to future collaboration and the evolution of Living Body as a proper band. The live group for their recent US tour took the form of a trio, featuring Alice Rowan handling many of the vocal and electronic drumming duties. The band stopped by Serious Business Music in DUMBO, Brooklyn, to give us our first taste of how they make it all happen live. Body Is Working, the debut LP by Living Body, is available now. Let's get weird with Weird Omen--a dark and mysterious French band that sings explosive rock 'n' roll.
Very Fresh is the musical project of Cindy Lou Gooden, a versatile musician who floats around the familiar Ava Luna and Speedy Ortiz orbit of bands. The band’s music is heavily anchored in the sweet verse-chorus-verse 90s territory with just slightly off-kilter, tender melodies. Cindy’s voice is raw and powerful, if deceptively gentle at times in a way that works to counter the punkish rhythms of the music. The band stopped by Serious Business Music in DUMBO, Brooklyn to share some tunes. Very Fresh’s Hey, It's Me! EP is available now from New Professor Music and Inflated Records. Listen to the audio podcast for more music and interview.
