Today we talk about our respective 4-6 Music Digest top picks. The three of us have different music backgrounds and taste, so this makes for an interesting count down. It's time to round out the year, listen to great music on this podcast and enjoy it. Every minute of it.

It's the Seal Of Approval Christmas Eve Special!!! I made an executive decision not to fill the show with cheesy Christmas songs, as my guess is that everyone else in the radio world is doing exactly that. But I can promise fantastic songs, and featured label that are local. Oh boy! I can't wait! Can you? How will it all turn out???

DJ Wynn finishes his countdown of his favorite albums that flew under the radar in 2013. Listen to music from Nils Frahm, Sin Fang, Thee Oh Sees, Hookworms, and William Onyeabor.
This week on Discovery Corner I am featuring Sacramento, CA-based World Hood. They are an Afro-Latin dub group but it really takes elements of hip-hop and afrobeat as well. Aside from that, they operate a community center in Sacramento called the Sol Collective that has music workshops as well as generally serving the community. I spoke to half of the duo, Anand Parmar, who provides the beats with his wife Estrella Hood on vocals. We discussed what exactly the Center does, growing up in Zambia and what the meaning behind their 2012 EP Mundo Libre is. Vamanos!
Big, HUGE show today! I'm sure by now we are all feeling that end of the year, holiday madness floating all around us? And this show is going to take that energy and direct it back into your soul, in a positive way/// So let's get going. }}Glitch/IDM{{ -ed-

Today's show features an exclusive in studio performance from the band Grandchildren!
Grandchildren are a Philadelphia-based band with lots of a drums, keyboards, horns, and mind-boggling arrangements. This six member-strong group (Russell Brodie, Adam Katz, Aleks Martray, Tristan Palazzolo, Roman Salcic, and John Vogel) uses a collage style to weave together their unique electro-acoustic orchestral pop. They crammed themselves into our studio to play some tunes, swap instruments, and chat about how they pull this whole wonderful menagerie together.

DJ Wynn lists his favorite records of 2013. This show counts down 10 through 6, which includes King Khan and The Shrines, Young Fathers, Julia Holter, Mount Kimbie, and Grandchildren.
This week on Discovery Corner I'm featuring Austin, TX's Balmorhea. They are a "minimalist instrumental" band, though according to the band they just play "music." Their songs are dramatic and powerful and they should definitely be used as the soundtrack for a "tour de force" film. The last record they released was Stranger in 2012 so when I spoke to Michael Muller and Rob Lowe of the band, they were decompressing from months and months of touring and promoting. We spoke about which one in the band is the "tech guy", what Austin is like this time of year and the cognitive process of creation. Get learned! JUKE & THE ALL-DRUNK ORCHESTRA - It's always a big deal for me having this band play, as they're about the most entertaining band around my neck of the woods, and they always get the room (and the people) dancing. "Budget Swing" is how they describe themselves, and that's not too far off. Let your dancing feet be the judge! Hey, Whaddaya Say, Let's Radio!
And so begins our epic four part year-end "best of" series. We'll talk about our respective top six albums featured on Music Digest over the course of this episode and the next one, then the last two episodes of December account for our top six albums of the year that were not discussed on MD. Today we talk about our 4-6 Music Digest top picks. The three of us have different music backgrounds and taste, so this makes for an interesting countdown. DJ Wynn attempts to ignore the east coast snow storm by warming up with tropical numbers by Calixto Ochoa, Angel Vasquez, Doctor Nico, and Shugo Tokumaru.
Well, today's show features Album Of The Month by Metalleg, Classic Album by Sugar, and more new music than you can stick a shake at. Shark? return! Remember, it's not “Shark!” or “Shark” -- the question mark is important, asking "is it a shark?" every time (yes, just like their early tune/theme song, "Shark?"). Now that we're all caught up, let's take a look at these Brooklyn dudes. You'll quickly come to love Kevin Diamond's deadpan growl and nihilistic tales, Andy Kinsey's kick-you-in-the-teeth bass, and Andy Swerdlow's drum machine-come-to-life beats. And newcomer Jared Hiller shreds on guitar in a beautifully dirty way. While they've been a favorite of the local NYC scene for the past few years thanks to a healthy appreciation for beer (and fine wine!), clever cover song choices, and a not entirely tongue-in-cheek fixation on 90s pop culture (especially Jock Jams -- they must really love Jock Jams), the inclusion of their single, "California Grrls," in GTA V is liable to spread their fame a bit further. Honestly, it's about time. We love a good, fuzzy jam blasted out with deafening guitar noise and surf grooves, and between their EPs and now a couple of full length albums, Shark? has plenty of that to offer. Fans of Pixies, The Modern Lovers, The Replacements, The Beach Boys, and anything called punk before 1990 should stop screwing around and get into Shark? ASAP.
DJ Wynn lists his favorite single tracks of the year. Not official singles, but tracks that caused goosebumps and can be played over and over again. Listen to tracks from Nils Frahm, Blood Orange, Sin Fang, Thee Oh Sees, and William Onyeabor.
This week on Discovery Corner I'm featuring Brooklyn indie pop sensations, Lucius! They released their debut LP Wildewoman in mid-October to critical acclaim and fanfare. The band is comprised of two lead singers, Holly Laessig and Jess Wolfe, who offer a "two as one" vocal duality as well as an aesthetically appealing symmetrical stage setup. I spoke to Holly about her unique chemistry with Jess, the concept of duality and symmetry that Lucius adheres by, and what it is to be a Wildewoman. Enjoy this one! PATRICK SALT RYAN - Let's just get this out of the way first. I love Patrick Salt Ryan. I first saw him play a few years ago, to a load of rude and obnoxious drunk people in a bar. My friend Sean Dougherty (manager of The Grand Victory) told me to make sure I listened to the between song banter, and I'm glad I did, as it's just as entertaining as the songs. Listen, as Patrick berates Sean for not telling him about a secret Black Flag show, and hear him battle with the tuning of his guitar. I don't know about you, but to me, this is entertainment personified. Hey, Whaddaya Say, Let's Radio!
Today we break down Somewhere Between Here And Nowhere, the newest release from The Black Hollies. Released on October 22nd by Ernest Jenning Records, the album is the New Jersey band's fourth release, arriving four years after their last LP. Justin Morey, the lead vocalist has spent many years working with sound production, and it really shows on this release. Lush ethereal soundscapes create a wall of sound layered with fuzz pedals, antique organs, and more, mimicking nostalgic elements in psych rock rock.

This week on Discovery Corner I'm featuring Southern, VT's Gold Town. They play down 'n dirty traditional bluegrass infused with a punk rock energy. They are known to rock a bar from time to time but they're also on the Vermont farmer's market circuit. You'll exclusively hear songs from their 2011 self-titled release, but Stearns let it be known that they are working on new music that features more fiddle. We discussed the influence punk had on their style, the story behind the song "Rutland", and how they would compare themselves to more popular bands with banjos. Enjoy, folks! Today we review a self titled EP from the Vancouver based all-girl rock trio PUPS. The band has seasoned musician Rose Melberg (of Tiger Trap, The Softies, and Go Sailor) in it, and offers a fun and adorable take on garage rock. The EP is concise, short and sweet, but offers a mature sound and interesting rhythm changes, as well as impressive female vocal harmonies. A cohesive, accessible, easy album thats execution is more difficult than it sounds.

This week on the show I am proud to present The Big Takeover! They are a reggae/ska ensemble straight out of the beautiful little mountain town of New Paltz, NY where I spent four years getting an anthropology degree and singing a cappella. I spoke with the lead singer Nee Nee Rushie, originally from Jamaica, about how her experience of adjusting to life in New York impacted the music she now plays. They are set to release the record Children of the Rhythm in January and I was lucky enough to snag a song from it. This week we review Cupid Deluxe, an impressive new effort from seasoned producer Devonte Hynes. This is Hynes' second LP under the moniker Blood Orange, but he has released other music through the bands Test Icicles and Lightspeed Champion. Hynes is the also the songwriting and production force behind Solange's album True and Sky Ferreira's hit "Everything is Embarrassing." Cupid Deluxe, released on Domino Records on November 14, is a compositional tour-de-force that somehow remains very modern while touching upon the nostalgia of Prince, the '80s, and R&B -among other elements.

Norwegian songwriter Susanne Sundfør performs an exclusive live set for BreakThru Radio in New York City.
Norwegian songwriter Susanne Sundfor exists at the intersection of two worlds (as cleverly depicted in the video for her single "The White Foxes") -- the ancient, natural world of forests and ruins, and the modern, manufactured world of technology, all covered in snow. This is true both thematically, as her songs are often lyrically cold and dark with subtle overtones of brilliant warmth, as well as sonically, blending lush piano elements with the more mechanical, almost industrial elements of pop music. Susanne stopped by to play some solo tunes and talk about the therapy of making art and how her own style developed. Featured song: “The Silicone Veil” Complete broadcast and audio playlist: http://b-t-r.co/16AFsCr The latest release by Susanne Sundfor, The Silicone Veil, is now available. THE JUGGS - It was my 40th Birthday in the middle of June this year, and to help me celebrate i decided to use up all my available money, so that I could visit all my lovely friends in New York for a month. I had a fantastic time, and whilst I was there, I recorded a bunch of amazing gigs at The Grand Victory in Brooklyn. I've already played you a set by The Suzan, and I follow it this week with an incredible set by The Juggs. Go and see them live if you get the chance. You won't regret it. Hey, Whaddaya Say, Let's Radio!
Today we're reviewing Kauliflowr, the second official LP release from master beatmaker Glen Booth, aka Knxwledge. The record came out on October 14th through the Dublin label All City, which distributed his debut album. Though he only has two official LPs under his belt, Knxwledge has over 50 unofficial releases, along with a self-proclaimed collection of over 500,000 beats. A sample master, this is what this dude loves to do. He focuses on throwback, classic stuff. The album comes off as a bit disjointed, but with some incredibly satisfying moments.
More new music on today's broadcast of the Folk Wave!

This week on the show I feature EO, the duo from Spokane, WA and Adelaide, AU respectively. They function in pretty much the same way the famed Postal Service does, sending parts of songs individually until it creates a cohesive whole. The method has been working as Jarrod Manuel and Drew Sullivan have done this in their other band, City of Satellites. EO has something to show for it, the recently released EP Somewhere Human. I speak to Drew Sullivan via telephone and we discuss the brotherhood he feels with Manuel, the creative process EO has without being geographically together, and his feelings on Washington dubstep. UNSINKABLE HEAVIES - "About time!" I hear you all say (AGAIN!)! Today we review Spencer Krug's fourth album under the moniker Moonface, Julie with Blue Jeans On. Released by Jagjaguwar on October 29th, the record offers a unique addition to extensive discography of Krug, who has been in many bands such as Wolf Parade, Swan Lake, Sunset Rubdown, and more. Julia with Blue Jeans On diverges substantially from his past endeavors, it is a stripped down album that features only piano and vocals. We're not entirely convinced.

This week on the show I feature Brooklyn, NY's Porcelain Raft. The band is comprised of the Italian-born musician, Mauro Remiddi and more recently, a live band that he tours with. The band most recently released the LP Permanent Signal in August, ostensibly a dreamy album but as Remiddi explained to me,  it's completely literal and an accurate depiction of his life post-tour. Put simply, Grooms are a noise pop band based in Brooklyn. From shifting lineups and genre experimentation to near-breakups, Travis Johnson's signature pop songwriting has always been at the core of the group. Whatever shape they take, Grooms' songs can be identified by their use of unique guitar tunings, dark lyrics, and impeccable use of space in the music. The band stopped by to play some songs from their latest release, and to chat with Travis about the process behind making it.

Whether you're losing sleep to CMJ or other midnight oil activities, this Worldwide Hour will keep you relaxed with music from Monguito El Unico, Staff Benda Bilili, and Jose Alfredo Jimenez.
Well, you remember last week, when the show was so packed full of jam that we had to remove some jam from the show, cos the jam was spilling out all over the equipment? Well, the same thing has happened AGAIN! We've had to extracise (?) sufficient jam from the show to negate (?) the need to deployment (?) of the Jam Overload system. Other than that, we're 100% raring to go though! Are you? Hey, Whaddaya Say? Let's Radio!

THE NEUTRINOS - Well, it's taken 7 years, but we've finally managed to coax The Neutrinos back into Old School Studios for another session. This session is a teaser for the 8 gigs in 2 days that the band are about to do, in their own home, or "Klang Haus" as it's currently known. It's a special event for the "Norwich Sound & Vision" Festival, and all 8 shows are sold out in advance. I'm thrilled to have a ticket, so I'll tell you lot how it goes. In the meantime, you'll just have to make do with this equally intimate session. Hey, Whaddaya Say, Let's Radio!
Today we review Dream River, the newest album from producer, performer, and songwriter Bill Callahan. Well, today's show is so packed full of jam, that we had a jam leakage, and had to remove some of the songs to NEXT week's show, just to avoid any more damage to the equipment. It's quite an avante guarde show, on the whole, but with a few indie-pop gems thrown in for good measure. Wey're 100% raring to go though! Are you? Hey, Whaddaya Say? Let's Radio!

Today we review The Golden Age, the first full length album from Dizzy Wright. The 22-song beast of an album that was released on August 19th on Funk Volume is a journey of an LP. Dizzy covers consciousness, frontin' in the rap game, always being consistent in life, and many other tropes and themes in the album. Though it's full of good messages, it can get a little preachy at times, but the great 90s beats are an awesome listen and a great ode to era. It's available for free download on Datpiff.com

Well, today's show couldn't have turned out better, even if we'd tried. We're just naturals. Let's face it, even with one of my hands tied behind Iain's back, we've still managed to let an awesome cat out the radio show bag of hits, and all you need to do is let the chat and music wash over you, like some kind of relaxing sponge..? Wey're 100% raring to go though! Are you?

THE SUZAN - I was lucky enough to chance upon this band almost about two years ago at a venue called Bruar Falls in Brooklyn. Then I was lucky enough to chance upon them again about a year later in the same room, but in what was now The Grand Victory. I was by that time a fan, and leapt at the chance to record them when they played there again in June 2013. They blew me away with the catchy songs, and boundless, happy energy. I suggest you put on some dayglo clothes, and dance around your bedroom like a child. OK?
Today we review The Courtney's self-titled full length album that was released on Hockey Dad Records on June 7th. On the eight song album the three ladies in the band deliver a nostalgic ode to 90s and New Zealand rock with harmonized vocals, tight instrumentals, and slacker garage sass. This is an album to have some fun to.

Check it out, my friends, it's a brand new episode of The Rock Show, only on BTR. Do we got Rock? Oh yes, we've got Rock.
Autumn is here, and so begins a new chapter in the history of the UK Hip Hop Show. Sinista and Stark Note have had to relocate, after a coup by The Orcs led to an overthrowing of power at the tower. So The Fearless Duo have had to relocate to the "Secret Rendezvous Point". Sinista is the only one to make it there so far, so is on his lonesome this month. But nontheless the show is still packed with heavy Hip Hop from the likes of Audit, Triple Darkness, Blasfima Sinna and Klashnekoff is featured in Classic Corner this month. So after a few mishaps and an overthrowing of power we still have a heavy show in store.

Since the last time Speedy Ortiz dropped by our studio, the band has played countless shows all around the country and landed on the radar of the music scene at large. That same charming, lo-fi grunge sound that made them endearing early on still applies, but now the pairing of Sadie Dupuis' melodies with satisfying fuzz comes on like a confident juggernaut -- not that there was any lack of confidence before. If you're like us and have a serious soft spot for the likes of 90s greats such as Helium, Pavement, and Mazzy Star, Speedy Ortiz should already be your new favorite band. Here, we present a performance of “Casper (1995)” from their recent session for Serious Business on BTR.
DJ Wynn celebrates The Gipsy King's 25th anniversary, then spins new music from Femi Kuti and crackly favorites from Cheo Feliciano and Justo Betancourt.
Well, today's show is set to be a classic for sure, as Iain returns from his glamorous holiday in (the south of?) France. He's all tanned up, and topped up with energy (yeah, right..), and Jason has drunk a complimentary Red Bull Icecream, so he's 100% raring to go too! Are you? Hey, Whaddaya Say? Let's Radio!

It’s BTR Wednesday with DJRePete!
This week, Mr Jason and his rusty steed Dr Patel get up to all sorts of mischeif, in the flimsy guise of entertainment. Make no mistake though, the music at least is the toppest of quality. HEIDI GOODBYE - Heidi was brought to my attention by my good showbiz buddy Camille Davila, who has been on this show a few times before, in different guises. Camille described Heidi as sounding "like Syd Barrett, only more bluesy", which I think is a great description. I was lucky enough to see Heidi (and Camille) play live on her recent tour, and she was amazing, and breath-taking. I had no breath left at the end. She took all of it! So, get your asthma pumps at the ready!
Today we review Neko Case's first release in over four years, The Worse Things Get, The Harder I Fight, The Harder I Fight, The More I Love You, which came out on Anti Records on September 3rd. The album is highly personal and displays confusion, identity, and loss. It was a labor of love for Neko Case who lost her grandmother as well as both her parents since her last LP. Her beautiful voice ebbs and flows through indie-pop, alt-country, full production, and inspired a cappella moments on the album.
Tune in today for tons of new music on The Folk Wave!

Aidan Knight performs live in our studios!
Based in Victoria, British Columbia, Aidan Knight and his band play -- in their words, quoting the words of others -- "baroque" and "downtrodden" music. Don't let this mislead you -- though much of it is slow, or mellow, or quiet, there's a subdued sort of optimism going on just below the surface throughout many of these experimental folks songs. Sure, there's the sort of melancholy that comes from recording in a cabin in the woods, Bon Iver-style, but there's more to Aidan Knight than that. Here, he and the band play some songs and Aidan talks a bit about the songwriting and recording process.

Well, today's show is a super-intimate affair, with Mr Jason hiding under a togged up duvet/comforter. No, he's not hiding FROM you, dear listener, he's simply trying to make his dulcet tones even more melodious and sooting to your delicate ear. And to your other ear, which isn't so important. He's 100% raring to go! Are you? Hey, Whaddaya Say? Let's Radio!

That’s your retrospective edition of the BTR Wednesday with DJRePete!
This week, Mr Jason will be playing lots of songs sung by lovely ladies. What with him being such a superstar playboy. Erm.. That's what it says here anyway.. Well, I'm not going to argue. I'm just here to type up the playlist, and write this intro blurb. Still, I just looked at the playlist, and there really is some great music in there, so.. How will it turn out??? On Thursday, August 29th, workers at fast food chains such as McDonald's and KFC conducted strikes and walkouts across the country, hoping for wage hikes that would boost their hourly pay to $15 from the current federal minimum of $7.25. In New York, local officials and politicians joined workers in Union Square to express their support for raising the minimum wage and the chance to unionize. BTR Pulse’s Lauren Hawker spoke with organizers and participants at the demonstration.

COLOUR ME WEDNESDAY - Hurray! It finally happened! This session has been a long time in the making. Colour Me Wednesday first contacted me over 18 months ago, when they'd heard the "Swearin" session on this very show, and being fans of Swearin', and enjoying the session, they asked if they could come to the studio in Norwich to record one of their own. Well, due to lack of transport it didn't end up happening, but we kept in touch, and when I saw that the first date of their tour was going to be in Norwich, I said "hey dudes, why not swing by the studios they like to call old school after your show?". They said "wicky wicky awesome", or words to that effect. And here we are with this great session in hand. Hey, Whaddaya Say, Let's Radio!
Today we review Deep Trip, the first studio album from the band Destruction Unit. Released on Sacred Bones on August 20th, the 9 track LP is a very full, guitar heavy album that taps into a variety of genres such as punk, metal, psychedelia, drone, space-rock, and more. Destruction Unit, a band that has had a variety of members come and go, offers a solid, hopefully lasting line-up in this loud, fast, and intricate record jammed with intense guitar sounds.
Today's show kicks off with music from Sydney Wayser!

Radical Dads are the Gowanus, Brooklyn-based trio of Lindsay Baker, Chris Diken, and Robbie Guertin (formerly of Clap Your Hands Say Yeah). In addition to pumping out great pop jams accompanied by only the most excellent artwork, the band professes their appreciation for "gummy snacks, hitting the fizz, snoozin’ on Sundays, meditation, meditating on pizza, pizza itself, sunglasses, friends, all-time peace, and the search for the attainment of the transcendence of coolness." We can get behind that. Oh, and the music rules, too. Here, we present an additional video from their recent session, featuring a performance of title track from their latest album.
DJ Wynn shares his experience with Whiskey and Westerns, which shaped today's set featuring Amadou & Mariam, Gipsy Kings, Lee Scratch Perry, and Tinariwen.
Well, it's shaping up to be a hell of a show today! We have a new Classic Album, in the shape of Galaxie 500's "On Fire" LP from 1989. Birds in Weather perform live for BTR at Serious Business Recording Studio in Manhattan.
Birds in Weather is a Brooklyn indie rock trio whose meteorological moniker is more than just an excuse to put birds on their artwork (though that does tend to happen). Comprised of a painter, an opera singer, and an alcohol distiller who were brought together by floods in both Brooklyn and Denmark, BiW craft dynamic, Velvety art-pop songs.

Kleenex Girl Wonder is the chameleon-esque stage name of one Graham Smith, a songwriter from the suburbs of Chicago who's been calling New York City his home for some time now. Beginning with a group of neighborhood friends and evolving into a shifting cast of players, KGW is a sort of indie rock institution, constantly experimenting while staying true to its time-tested formula. The current band features Smith on bass and vocals, Thayer McClanahan on guitar, and Matt LeMay on drums.
