SondorBlue is a super tight pop band from Charleston, South Carolina, which they endearingly refer to as “Chucktown.” Though they don’t share the same endless solos and stoned vibes as jam bands, they do tend to operate in a similar fashion, touring relentlessly and honing their musical craft for a growing legion of fans. These four super positive friends are aiming high, and with their musical sensibilities and skills, they just might have a shot of getting there. They stopped by Serious Business Music in DUMBO, Brooklyn to share some tunes with us.

Keeping up with the accusations against men in the music industry is as depressing as it is confusing.

Today we're taking a trip down memory lane to kick off the first of our 2017 holiday broadcasts! On today's broadcast you'll hear from Charly Bliss, Emilyn Brodsky, Gracie And Rachel, and Rose Cousins.
Charly Bliss is one of those bands that immediately brings to mind a slew of favorites, especially for those of us who had their musical awakening in the 90s. Reminiscent of the awesomely fuzzy, poppy goodness of Veruca Salt, The Breeders, That Dog, and Letters To Cleo, the band proudly identifies their genre as “bubblegrunge” (was that a word back then? It’s likely, but either way it’s super appropriate for them right here and now) and does a killer job of nailing that vibe and improving upon it, updating the sound and look for the 2010s while still conveying that feeling of throwing a party in your teenage bedroom. Eve, Spencer, Sam, and Dan have a really great thing going on, and they stopped by Serious Business Music in DUMBO, Brooklyn, for this session. Guppy by Charly Bliss is available now from Barsuk Records. Listen to the audio podcast for more music and interview.

Jane Weaver is a musician from Liverpool, England. As someone who runs a record label and plays in several groups, she is certainly no stranger to collaboration, but as a songwriter and performer she’s uniquely autonomous and largely responsible for everything you’ll hear on her solo output -- though friends do lend a hand (or instrument) here and there as needed. Jane possesses an otherworldly voice, uniquely suited to her distinctly light yet powerful style which blends perfectly with both the electronics and traditional instruments employed in her songs. She stopped by Serious Business Music in DUMBO, Brooklyn for this intimate look at her music. The Architect EP is available now from Fire Records. Listen to the audio podcast for more music and interview.
Gabrielle Marlena is a folk singer who has moved from Connecticut to Montreal to Brooklyn. Her sound and songs, influenced by these moves and her life experiences, come together in a way that is both introspective but relatable while also being super easy to listen to. BTRtoday caught Gabrielle at Two Boots in Williamsburg, Brooklyn for a performance of her song "Percolate." Gabrielle Marlena’s debut album, Good Music For You, is now available

Hailing from the rich cultural breeding ground of Philadelphia, Joy Again is a quintet right at that vital point in their career between just starting out and truly figuring out their sound - in this case, that means their songs shift from fast and punky to experimental and atmospheric folk at times - but what’s clear already is that they’ve got some big ideas, musical chops, and a lot of energy to put to good use. We were psyched to have them stop by Serious Business Music in DUMBO, Brooklyn to get a look at them as they work towards their debut full length. “Kim” + “On A Farm” single is available now from Never Grow Up Records.

Jessica Jalbert is a Canadian musician based in Edmonton, Alberta, and the driving force behind Faith Healer. From jammy, funky indie rock to woozy synth pop, the band’s style shifts subtly throughout their record, but never strays from the core of sweet and catchy, pulling-at-the-heartstrings vocals that just sound totally perfect. The band stopped by Serious Business Music in DUMBO, Brooklyn, on a recent tour for this special performance. Try ;-) is available now from Mint Records. Phoebe Bridgers is a talented young songwriter with an acutely mature voice and style. It’s no surprise that she caught the attention of Ryan Adams, who helped to usher her music into the world on a much, much larger scale. We caught up with her on a recent trip to NYC and filmed this intimate, though very much public, solo performance of her beautiful song, “Motion Sickness.” Stranger In The Alps is available now from Dead Oceans.

All Our Exes Live in Texas is the collaboration of four of the best singer-songwriters from Sydney, Australia -- Elana Stone, Katie Wighton, Hannah Crofts and Georgia Mooney. Their talents combine beautifully with four-part harmonies around mandolin, ukulele, accordion, and guitar and while their music certainly has some sweet subtleties, there’s nothing soft about the band’s vibe, which tends toward badasserie. We caught up with them on their recent trip to New York City for this intimate performance in Prospect Park, Brooklyn. When We Fall, the debut album from All Our Exes Live In Texas, is available now.
Brooklyn trio Sloppy Heads have emerged from the secret lair where they’ve crafted their first full on, totally real, cool-as-hell LP with the help of the capable James McNew (Yo La Tengo, Dump). It’s maybe just a little sloppy, but more like loose, in a sweet, groovy kind of way. The band stopped by Serious Business Music iN DUMBO to show us the new jams.

Big Bliss is a Brooklyn band formed in 2015 by brothers Cory (drums) and Tim (vocals, guitar) Race, along with bassist Wallace May. The trio blasts out a furious sort of post-punk and indie rock that draws a bit on shoegaze (think perhaps a little Mission Of Burma here, a little Interpol there), and have been playing shows almost constantly since their inception. We finally got them to take a breather and stop by Serious Business Music in DUMBO, Brooklyn to show us what they’ve been up to. The “Fortune” single is available now from Exit Stencil Recordings.

Hyukoh is a juggernaut of the Korean indie rock world. Taking on K-Pop and proving that rock n’ roll and other international sounds are welcome in the pop culture scene best known for sugary sweet pop, they’ve climbed the charts and garnered considerable critical acclaim. While their retro-leaning fashion sense nods to something else, musically they run the gamut from gentle indie rock and folk to hard-hitting punk and rap touches. Extremely versatile musicians, and multi-lingual singers, Hyukoh is set for even further world domination. While in NYC on their first ever North American tour, they stopped by to share their music with us in this session, recorded live at Serious Business Music in DUMBO. Hyukoh’s 23 is available now. Normally we’d write some sort of semi-thoughtful description of the band here, but in this case we’ll let their Facebook bio do the heavy lifting: “sad13 (sad thirteen) is a cyborg dog astrally projected from the recent past to save the middle school dance. sadie dupuis is sad13.” That tells you pretty much everything you need to know. Also, they’re pop songs -- just as sweet, sugary, and satisfying as the stuff you heard on the radio growing up, but much less terrible in the sense that they’re written in a way that takes on the negative portrayals of women we’ve grown way too accustomed to hearing and turns it on its head. We’d expect nothing less of Speedy Ortiz’s Sadie Dupuis, who’s earned a reputation as one of the best songwriters around these days. In their own words, The Appleseed Collective is a "string-swing" band. They don't quite fit into any specific genre, which suits them just fine, as each member adds their own influence and style to the mix. Featuring acoustic instruments and smooth vocals, the sound is reminiscent of something from an era long past while at the same time feeling fresh and new. The group, based in Ann Arbor, Michigan, is known for touring extensively and we caught up with them at The Back Room, a historic speakeasy in New York City that fits the band's aesthetic perfectly, for a performance of "Bankruptcy Of The Soul."
The Yeah Yeah Yeahs are amazing—but this new song is more like No No No.
Seth Applebaum (also of Brooklyn psych-surf freaks, The Mad Doctors) is apparently pretty prolific when it comes to experimental, groovy, weirdo jams. Ghost Funk Orchestra is more no-wave than the funk in their name may imply, but either way, they’re definitely all party. The massive band crammed themselves, horns and all, into Serious Business Music in DUMBO, Brooklyn, for this lively session. GFO’s Demos & Outtakes is available now.

gobbinjr (lowercase, despite what autocorrect will tell you) is the musical project of Madison, Wisconsin-native-but-currently-NYC-livin’ songwriter, Emma Witmer. Facebook says that her middle name is Jerk, but we don’t think it is. We also don’t really think she’s a jerk, even when her songs get kind of mean. How much of a jerk can you be if you name your band after your first bong? Exactly. Witmer’s music -- recorded on her own -- is pretty personal, but live she’s got a whole band to give the songs that extra energy and they stopped by Serious Business Music in DUMBO, Brooklyn, to play for us. Vom Night and Shea Forever are available now.

Chicago trio Dream Version -- Eric Brummitt, Alec Jensen, and Michael Kunik -- have been perfecting their poppy, post-punk-inspired indie rock since 2013. Keeping instrumentation to the classic power trio setup gives the band a lot of room to play and experiment with their idea of pop music, pushing things further into the arty, experimental territory that makes them feel a bit more in line with The Fall than The Kinks. The music is deceptively smart in it’s simplicity, and the lyrics manage to turn personal questions and conflicts into rock anthems. The band stopped by Serious Business Music in DUMBO to share their music with us. Fight Fair by Dream Version is available now. Listen to the audio podcast for more music and interview.
Mosquitos first gained notoriety for their Bossa Nova/indie pop hit “Boombox” in the 2000s. Domino Kirke has returned. Her music career began early when she was “discovered” at just 17 and over the years she’s taken several turns through various projects and genres that have ultimately led to her current endeavor and a new record.  Her first release in 5 years -- and first under her own name -- it arrives with a heavy dose of inspiration from her friend and musical collaborator, Luke Temple. It’s worth noting that Domino comes from quite a unique family of talented folks: her father is the drummer from Free and Bad Company, her mother runs a SoHo boutique, and her sisters Jemima and Lola are both successful actresses. Domino stopped by Serious Business Music in DUMBO, Brooklyn, with guitarist Jen Turner to share this intimate take on some of her new music.

Native Harrow is Devin Tuel, accompanied by her musical partner and conspirator, composer/multi-instrumentalist Stephen Harms. We first encountered the duo in 2015, performing for our cameras in the quiet confines of a bar in Brooklyn. Since then, Native Harrow has changed quite considerably, releasing much more music, moving, and spending a significant amount of time on the road developing a strong live show and letting Devin’s songs stretch their legs and find their footing. This is all evident in their latest batch of music and this session, recorded live at Serious Business Music in DUMBO, Brooklyn during their summer 2017 tour. Sorores, the latest release from Native Harrow, is available now. Listen to the audio podcast for more music and interview.

Amy Oelsner is a songwriter currently based in Bloomington, Indiana. With her band, and under the name Amy O, she has succeeded in developing a record that manages to feel both familiar and fresh, referencing the much-adored sounds of bands like Sleater-Kinney and Helium with bombastic riffs and solid semi-sweet melodies while also revealing some authentic emotional truths. Amy’s no stranger to putting it all out there -- in addition to working on music in various forms for over a decade, she’s also poured her talents into zine culture, with a new release in the form of Yoko Oh Yes!, a collection of interviews with female musicians. Amy O stopped by Serious Business music in DUMBO, Brooklyn, to rock out for this fun session. Elastic by Amy O is available now from Winspear. David Nance is a classic rocker. We don’t mean that he plays classic rock, but he DOES rock in the way that most bands these days can’t, or at least don’t bother to. Like, he embodies it. In that long haired, feedback-slinging, getting into the groove, cymbal-smashing vibe, custom-made for tape hiss freaks and vinyl crackle aficionados. Music to get into and get down to. We like it a whole lot. The band dropped by Serious Business Music in DUMBO to shake it up for this session! Negative Boogie is available now from Ba Da Bing Records.

Bob Marley. Michael Jackson. Jason Mraz. We heard it all this weekend during our search for the most fun, funky and soulful New York City subway performers. Below are the stories and images of our featured underground artists. Mikaiel Troxler “I’m poverty stricken. I perform in subways because it allows me to make money while spending time with my incredible kids,” says Traxler, seen below with his children   Stylez Enuff Dance Crew "It's more challenging to be a subway performer. For larger venues, people buy tickets, so there is an expectation that they will stay and watch the whole performance. Underground, you have to listen to people's energy and improvise in order to hold their attention," says D'amini, seen below (in gray and black) with his Stylez Enuff partner Jerry (green and red) at the Delancey/Essex subway station.   Dennis Roberson "I started performing original guitar music down here about three years ago, after my industry (advertising) switched to computer ads. I hit a crossroad and decided to pursue my art through music. It has been the best decision of my life," said Roberson, seen below at the 14th St/Union Square subway station.   Manuelson “I perform in the subway in order to promote my teaching business. I teach guitar to Spanish kids and adults,” said Manuelson, an immigrant from El Salvador seen here playing Incan Pan Pipes at the Delancey/Essex subway station.   Yi Zhuo Yu Yi Zhuo Yu, a member of the Street Musical Club, is seen performing below at the Grand Street subway station.Yu plays the er-hu, a two-stringed Chinese instrument commonly known in the west as the "Chinese Violin."   Mystic One and Prince Usula "I know when the trains are coming and going. I can feel it. That is how I control the energy of the people around me. This power of my mind is where my name, Mystic One, comes from,” said Mystic One, pictured on the left below alongside Prince Usula as the duo performs Bob Marley’s “Three Little Birds” at the West 4th Street subway station.
Trevor Sensor is a  23-year old songwriter from Sterling, Illinois. With a voice that reveals his clear musical lineage (Guthrie>Dylan>Waits) and a fresh punkish attitude, the prolific Trevor has a lot to say. Musically, he’s been in some great hands already - working with Jonathan Rado of Foxygen and the creative talent of Richard Swift in the studio, as well as the band Whitney backing his tunes on record, things are off to a killer start for this young talent. He stopped by Serious Business Music in DUMBO to share a few tunes with us in this intimate session.   Trevor Sensor’s debut LP, Andy Warhol’s Dream, is available now from Jagjaguwar.

Roselit Bone is the 9-piece gang of cowboys spreading the dark visions of Joshua McCaslin, based out of Portland, Oregon. McCaslin’s style draws heavily on country, but the band’s vibe and subject matter veer hard from post-punk to rockabilly, pulling together a soundtrack for the end times that feels wholly appropriate these days. The band crammed into the live room at Serious Business Music in DUMBO, Brooklyn, to share their tales with us. Blister Steel is available now on Friendship Fever.
Ryan Adams fired shots at frenemies the Strokes and fans are wondering; can’t we all just get along?
Dinosaur Pile-Up is the UK-based grunge trio of Matt Bigland, Michael Sheils and Jim Cratchley. Though the sound they’ve mastered has strong associations to a certain era and city, the huge, catchy, riff-heavy verse-chorus-verse dynamics the band employs definitely feel their own. Even more impressive is the group’s super sharp, tight vocal performance and pure rock power. The guys stopped by Serious Business Music in DUMBO while on tour with Chevelle to show us how it’s done. Eleven Eleven by Dinosaur Pile-Up is available now.
Brian Hill is an ever-evolving work of art in progress. From a brief time in the modeling world to playing guitar in the studio and live with bands like Chairlift and Tamaryn, the revelation of Hill’s own project has been a long time coming. Stemming from a collaboration with friends (members of Froth, Cherry Glazerr, etc) to a rotating cast of players in the form of the Noh Starrs, his music has undeniable nods to 60’s and 70’s New York City rock, folk, and psychedelia. Known for immersive, memorable performances, Brian brought his gang to our live room at Serious Business Music in DUMBO, Brooklyn, for this fairly reserved, yet thoroughly impressive performance. And The Noh Starrs will be available August 18, 2017 on Modern Sky.
I made a fashionably late entrance this year. I brought my sunscreen, sunglasses and wore my most summery outfit. But the joke was on me. I avoided sunburn but left the fest drenched and shivering.
Thelma and the Sleaze is the hardest working band in Nashville! At least that’s what they say… and we’re inclined to believe them. Headed up by the rock ‘n roll powerhouse LG, the band is filled out with only the most capable of shredders to blast out the band’s badass jams. The current power trio lineup stopped by Serious Business Music in DUMBO, Brooklyn, during a recent tour. Somebody’s Doin’ Something  is available now from Last Hurrah Records.
De’Wayne Jackson grew up in Spring, Texas, before finding his way to Los Angeles. There, he crafted a unique blend of musical influence and style from R&B to indie rock resulting in a smooth bed for his poetic style. In this unique session, he brought his rich vocal style, accompanied by just an acoustic guitar, to Serious Business Music in DUMBO, Brooklyn. De’Wayne Jackson’s debut EP, Don’t Be Afraid, is available now. Listen to the audio podcast for more music and interview.

Saw Black is an Americana rock musician based in Richmond, Virgina. Relatively new to the music industry and having just released his debut record on his own label,  he’s off to a strong start. Stylistically, there are clear nods to roots and americana rock, with a bit of a twang and a kick in the gut, and he brought his talented crew, including a few legit cowboys, to Serious Business Music in DUMBO for this session. Azalea Days is available now on Crystal Pistol Records.

City scenesters escaped the concrete jungle for two nights of fun in Rockaway Beach.
Grim Streaker is a musical force to be reckoned with. Full speed ahead, all systems go, with the power of a jet engine flying upside down. You get the picture. This is unabashedly bashing, but tuneful, punk rock for modern lovers, form a Brooklyn band full of some highly talented usual suspects from the scene… grab your board and get out there. Check out this blistering jam from when they crash landed at Serious Business Music in DUMBO, Brooklyn.   Girl Minority is available now on cassette.

The Nude Party put on an epic music festival called 'Send It Week' before moving to NYC. These are the pictures from it--complete with dicks & dildos.
Alyse Vellturo is the heart and soul of this Brooklyn synth/guitar indie pop band. Catchy melodies, a bit of punkish pop sensibility, and totally relatable lyrics make everything about pronoun earworm-prone, as evidenced by this session, when the band stopped by Serious Business Music in DUMBO, Brooklyn.   There’s No One New Around You is available now.
A music festival that's the epitome of sex, drugs and rock 'n' roll.
Sara Savery is a Danish singer based in Brooklyn, known as a vocalist and instrumentalist from Blue Foundation, People Press Play, and Ghost Society. With her new project, Drop The Gun, she takes her production skills to seriously smooth and groovy depths, heading further into the atmospheric electronic pop territory that her previous work only hinted at. There are things happening with Drop The Gun that make it feel like just the beginning of a long ride with much more to come. Check out this intimate session, recorded live at Serious Business Music in DUMBO, Brooklyn. Drop The Gun’s debut, self-titled EP is available now.
Oak House is an indie/psych-rock trio from  Athens, Georgia -- or guitarist Gresham Cash, drummer Wes Gregory and bassist Connor Sabula. With huge, grungy dynamics and epic choruses, the band plays with a ton of passion. This is definitely guitar rock, and the classic trio formation feels brand new when a band like this comes along to freshen it up. The guys dropped by Serious Business Music in DUMBO, Brooklyn, to show us how it’s done. Hot or Mood, the sophomore LP from Oak House, is available now.
The Pittsburgh duo does dad rock right. Maybe we should call it dad punk?

Henry Jamison is a songwriter currently based in Vermont. Previously, we got to know his hauntingly poetic style through his previous Maine-based band, The Milkman’s Union. The Nashville-based brothers, bandmates, producers, and co-songwriters Michael Ford, Jr., and Ben Ford cut their teeth in the music industry with their previous band, The Apache Relay, which focused on going big with both sound and personnel. With Airpark, they’ve shifted their focus to simpler, tighter, but still highly impactful pop music, which they say is “inspired by minimalism, melody and groove-heavy percussion.” See and hear for yourself in this session, recorded live at Serious Business Music in DUMBO, Brooklyn. Airpark’s debut, Early Works, Volume 1, is available now.
There’s no need to focus on how lady-centric these bands are, but you can't deny these gals kick ass.
From made up psychedelic ouija pop band to totally real - as in loud, fast, and sweaty real - band, this supergroup composed of members of Fat White Family and the Eccentronic Research Council have come together to destroy pop music and rebuild it. Not sure they’re up for the challenge? Take a look and a listen, and we’re sure you’ll be convinced. They brought the chaos to Serious Business Music in DUMBO, Brooklyn for this eye-opening session.   Interplanetary Class Classics is available now from Chimera Music.
Matisyahu -- first known as a jam-loving, spiritually-influenced, and passionate singer -- has evolved over that past decade from a Grammy-nominated, #1 single performer to a full-on band. Rounded out by notable improviser Aaron Dugan, Dub Trio bassist Stu Brooks, percussionist/drummer Tim Keiper, and Addison Groove Project founder Rob Marscher, Matisyahu has amassed a fully capable band to keep up with his intense grooves and follow into jam territory on a whim. The group joined us at Serious Business Music in DUMBO to share a bit of what their new album has to offer in this very special session.   Matisyahu’s new album, Undercurrent, is available now.
It was an educational night of punk rock by seeing three generations of the genre.
The festival showcased seven bands in just four hours, transporting audiences to places like Riga, Latvia with Carnival Youth and Porto, Portugal with We Bless This Mess.
Rachel Trachtenburg is back at it with a new band. We know her from the cute and quirky Supercute!, The Prettiots, and The Trachtenburg Family Slideshow Players, but now she’s heading up a dreamy indie rock band - with some post-punk touches - that we’re really digging. At this point, Rachel is a true veteran of the local scene, having been actively recording and performing for over 15 years now, and all that experience certainly comes through. With Wooing, she takes more of a lead than ever before, and is joined by some excellent musicians to help out (here you may recognize drummer Rosie Slater from New Myths). Check them out in this session recorded live at Serious Business Music in DUMBO, and let their new EP be your summer soundtrack!   Wooing’s debut EP, Daydream Time Machine, is available now.
Songwriter Walter Martin is known as a lyricist and multi-instrumentalist for the band The Walkmen - and before that, Jonathan Fire*Eater. His solo career began a few years ago with a record of children’s music, and since then, he’s held onto that childlike wonder and quirky melodic sense of storytelling while continuing to craft fun folk songs for grownups. He joined us at Serious Business Music in DUMBO for a listen to some of his freshest tunes in this special session.   Walter Martin’s new album, My Kinda Music, is available now.
This month’s The Jazz Hole Live with Linus features a set by The Roxy Coss Quintet, recorded at Smalls Jazz Club in New York, NY
West Virginia songwriter William Matheny cut his teeth in the excellent band Southeast Engine before setting out on his current solo endeavor. Using Americana, country, and folk as a springboard for his powerful, literate indie rock story songs, Matheny has crafted a body of work to lure even the most devout indie snobs to the twangy side. He dropped by Serious Business Music in DUMBO with his band to show us just how they rock out down south. Strange Constellations is available now from Misra Records.
Blank Range is a Nashville rock n’ roll band -- which could mean any of a million things, but in this particular case, it means that this garagey rock band incorporates just enough classic rock (and twang) to give them an edge on other newcomers. Blank Range lands closer to Replacements territory than Johnny Cash, but the common thread is a weight to their pop songwriting that makes them stand out. The guys swung by Serious Business Music in DUMBO, Brooklyn, to show us how it’s done.   Vista Bent by Blank Range is available now from Thirty Tigers.
Emel Mathlouthi is a Tunisian singer-songwriter who is known for her unique blend of traditional sounds and electronic beats. With her current release, her style has developed into a fully-formed blend that feels both classic and fresh, with distinctly powerful and memorable vocals floating on a bed of guitar, electronically affected sound, and beats. For this intimate session, Emel brought a raw, beautifully stripped-down performance to Serious Business Music in DUMBO. Ensen is available now from Partisan Records.
Laetitia Tamko is the Brooklyn-based musician behind the much buzzed about project, Vagabon. With an adept skill for storytelling and an unforgettable vocal style, blended with a masterful use of tension in her unique indie rock arrangements, she has managed to gain some serious traction with this project, particularly since this year’s release of her first full length record. Vagabon, in full band form, dropped by Serious Business Music in DUMBO, Brooklyn, to share some of her fantastic earworms with us.
Gracie (Coates) and Rachel (Ruggles) are a remarkable new Brooklyn-based orchestral pop piano and violin duo with a tendency towards stark contrast in both sound and visuals. Joined by a live percussionist, they dropped by Serious Business Music in DUMBO, Brooklyn, to give us a preview. Gracie and Rachel’s self-titled debut full length LP will be release June 23, 2017.
Fraidycat is the Brooklyn-based trio of Andy Kinsey, Daniel de Juan, and Charlotte Kahn. They call their music “slop pop” but let’s call it what it is because sloppy isn’t really all that accurate: this is fun, anxiously grooving pop music with punk nods. There’s a playfulness and honesty to it that just works really well. Check it out for yourself -- the band stopped by Serious Business Music in DUMBO, Brooklyn, to show us what they’ve got (besides an excellent name). Other Better Places by Fraidycat is available now on cassette.
BTRtoday is giving you and a friend a chance to win two free tickets to Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival in Manchester, Tennessee.
Alexander F is the modern post-punk brainchild of Brooklyn musician Alex Toth, who is known for his work as a trumpet player and vocalist for Rubblebucket. It was a look inward during a silent retreat that inspired what would become the first batch of songs for Alexander F, which come to life with a perfectly poised execution, topped off by Alex’s captivating moves (think somewhere between Talking Heads’ David Byrne and Future Island’s Samuel Herring). The band descended upon the live room at Serious Business Music in DUMBO, Brooklyn, to give us a taste of what they’ve got going on! Alexander F’s self-titled new album is available now.
Lexie Roth grew up in upstate New York, surrounded by some huge musical figures connected to her guitarist father, Arlen Roth, laying the strong groundwork for her early musical development. Now she splits her time between Los Angeles and Martha’s Vineyard as she continues to further develop her tuneful, folk-influenced indie rock. A lot has happened since last we caught up with Fred Thomas (in a backyard in Austin, TX). In the two years since then, he quit his day job, got married, moved to Canada, and made a fantastic new album full of his trademark indie folk troubadour-style pop songs, full of hope and brutal honesty.   Over the past decade or so, the Los Angeles-based Blake Hazard has gone from playing on the streets of New York City to the successful duo The Submarines and now on to her current solo project. Here, she stopped by Serious Business Music in DUMBO solo for this intimate session! The Styrofoam remix of “Hey” is out now, with more singles and remixes coming throughout 2017.

Wyldlife are a supercharged 70’s-style punk rock ‘n roll gang from New York City. These guys are the total package - fast, tight, and overflowing with catchy riffs behind a wicked sense of humor and a sneer, all clad in the requisite leather jacket. Auditorium is the musical project of Los Angeles-based Spencer Berger, who began his music career singing with The Metropolitan Opera’s Children’s Chorus. A sense of drama persists in his music as well as on the album which he created by himself, recording all vocals and instruments -- the lush melodies and layers of sound provide a bed for Spenser’s tales. He dropped by Serious Business Music in DUMBO to share an intimate, stripped-down look at his music. The First Music is available now.
Like any good Jersey band, Springfield’s The Vaughns are inspired by bowling, fried food, and music. Their riffy, garagey take on punk is a fun one, filled with catchy melodies and sweet hooks. If this is your first time hearing/seeing them, pay attention! They dropped by Serious Business Music in DUMBO, Brooklyn, to show us how it’s done. The Tomfoolery EP by The Vaughns is available now.
Brooklyn indie rock trio Holy Tunics have been making the scene for a minute now, and we think they’re on to something with their catchy, upbeat, sun-kissed guitar rock. They dropped by Serious Business Music in DUMBO to share this brand new song with us. Hot To Trot by Holy Tunics is available now.
From Indian Lakes -- or Joey Vannucchi, who grew up near Indian Lakes, outside Yosemite National Park -- is a fascinating musical project. With lush orchestration on record, carefully thought out over the 3 month home recording process and reworked in a proper studio, and catchy melodies winding from folk to pop with a brief stop at emo along the way, From Indian Lakes seems to occupy a space we haven’t seen so expertly filled since the first couple of Death Cab For Cutie records. Raw emotion spilling out into beautiful, color songscapes are everywhere here, and Joey brought them to Serious Business Music in DUMBO, Brooklyn to share this special solo performance with us. Everything Feels Better Now by From Indian Lakes is available now from Triple Crown Records.
We’re going to let Darkwing describe themselves here: “Anti-hero Theme Music. Yin yang grunge. Music to promote critical thinking. Happy/albeit sometimes strange music with lyrics about being uncomfortable or disappointed in the world and oneself or straight up love and stuff.” That’s about as perfectly as it can be put. It’s also worth noting that the band -- based in Leonia, New Jersey, and made up of Richie, Zach, Louis, and Lyzi (also of Fruit & Flowers) -- is exceptionally adept at blasting out huge, badass rock music with sweet hooks. They brought the chaos to the studio at Serious Business Music in DUMBO.   Lameonia is available now, and Darkwing has new music coming soon.
Vinegar Mother is a progressive soul group begun in Connecticut and making moves in the NYC music scene.Comprised of Julia Zivic on vocals, Itamar Gov-Ari on keyboard, Jason Zivic on drums, and Mike Roninson on bass, the band is dedicated to bringing some much-needed good vibes to 2017. Secret Crush is an extremely likeable Brooklyn rock band made up of Greg Timmes, Matt Billington, Nick Rogers, and John Swanson. They’ve got the grungy, waily guitar thing so down that it makes it hard not to bounce along to their songs. Take a listen and you’ll see exactly what we mean. It’s ok, nobody can see you dancing in front of the computer. Go for it. Birth EP by Secret Crush is available now.

Parlor Walls is the Brooklyn-based trio of Alyse Lamb, Chris Mulligan, and Kate Mohanty. They dropped by Serious Business Music in DUMBO to bring the noise to our live room for this session! Opposites by Parlor Walls will be release March 10th by Northern Spy Records.
Roya is a Brooklyn-based band with a strong pedigree in the local and national scene, with members from notable acts Habibi, The Clean, Grooms, and Angry Angles. Musically, they tread the now-familiar world of post-punk groove, with touches of 60s pop and a focus on lyrics at the forefront that allow them to sing about even the darkest of subjects with a deceptively upbeat vibe. They stopped by Serious Business Music in DUMBO to give us a first look at and listen to what they have in store as their debut album looms. Roya’s self-titled debut record will be released via Burger Records on March 5, 2017.
Sam Kogon is a Brooklyn musician with an arsenal of vintage sounds and styles. His technicolor indie rock take on glam, which he’s apt to calling “baroque pop,” feels warm and familiar in a way that’s reminiscent of the Beach Boys at times. Surrounded by some of the scene’s most talented musicians -- including a collaboration with Frankie Cosmos on the album version of this particular track -- Kogon is a young artist with an already-impressive musical resume. Psychic Tears by Sam Kogon is available now from Beyond Beyond Is Beyond Records.
Nelson, Humberto, Andrea, and Luis are Brooklyn-based band, Stuyedeyed. Solilians is a psychedelic drone pop band from Long Island, New York. Appropriately enough, their album is dedicated to the memory of the late, great Leonard Nimoy, and sung in Hebrew. This cosmic crew of Sharon Malkin, Benjamin Malkin, Gabriel Walsh, and Neptune Sweet is very much on their own, special trip and we’re along for the ride. They dropped into Serious Business Music in DUMBO, Brooklyn, to bring some of their vibes our way for this session.

Emilyn Brodsky plays the ukulele with so much fire that you have to wonder why she doesn’t make the move to electric guitar… well, because she’s chosen her weapon, and it’s that tiny stringed instrument that she bashes away at while singing and commanding the stage with a similar intensity. This is part folk, part punk, but not entirely either one in the traditional sense. We’re kind of fascinated by Emilyn (she’s very chatty and has a way of drawing you into her world quickly) and we think you will be too. Check out this fun session recorded live at Serious Business Music in DUMBO, Brooklyn to see for yourself. Emilyn Brodsky’s Digestion is available now.

Orchid Mantis by Elizabeth Devlin will be released February 8, 2017.

Very Fresh is the musical project of Cindy Lou Gooden, a versatile musician who floats around the familiar Ava Luna and Speedy Ortiz orbit of bands. The band’s music is heavily anchored in the sweet verse-chorus-verse 90s territory with just slightly off-kilter, tender melodies. Cindy’s voice is raw and powerful, if deceptively gentle at times in a way that works to counter the punkish rhythms of the music. The band stopped by Serious Business Music in DUMBO, Brooklyn to share some tunes. Very Fresh’s Hey, It's Me! EP is available now from New Professor Music and Inflated Records.
Frances Cone is songwriter-keyboardist Christina Cone, along with Andrew Doherty, Alex Baron, and Adam Melchor.
