Honey Cutt is a Boston-based trio led by Kaley Honeycutt. With surfy touches on their dreamy indie rock sound, the band sounds right at home on the Kanine Records roster, which tends to love an upbeat snare and catchy vocal melodies. The band dropped by Serious Business Music while in town for the New Colossus Music Festival, which ended up being our very last session in the studio for the time being. Coasting by Honey Cutt is available now from Kanine Records. Listen to the audio podcast for more music and interview.
Motherhood is the Fredericton, NB, Canada-based trio of Brydon Crain, Penelope Stevens, and Adam Sipkema. A (rightfully) self-proclaimed trio of “deep-thinkin’ rippers,” they share an impressively high level of musicality and intensity that comes thru on record and truly shines in a live environment. With a twisting, propulsive sort of artiness to their heavy, HEAVY rock, the band manages to produce a gnarly, twangy, fuzzy sort of new sound without ever feeling like too much. They dropped by Serious Business Music in Brooklyn to blow our minds for this session. Dear Bongo is available now from Forward Music Group. Listen to the audio podcast for more music and interview.
It’s almost the end, folks. On today’s show, I’m revisiting moments in the studio with Jo Schornikow, Air Waves, Liz Vice, Worriers, and Miwi La Lupa.
The music made by Brooklyn band Kissed By An Animal is a perfect sonic parallel to musical mastermind and illustrator Dima Drjuchin’s visual aesthetic – bright, colorful, bold, and often, totally tripped out. With everything from psychedelic riff-loving wailfests to 00’s-esque sweaty dance party vibes, the band rolls along through the many genres at their disposal to great effect. They brought the party to the live room at Serious Business Music in Brooklyn to give us a taste of their world. Kissed By An Animals’ self-titled debut is available now. Dave Monks – best known as the bandleader of Canadian indie rock band Tokyo Police Club – doesn’t waste any time. Here, he presents a stripped-down taste of some of his newest tunes, accompanied by Alyson McNamara, at Serious Business Music in Brooklyn. Dave Monks’ first solo LP, On A Wave, is available now from Dine Alone Records. Listen to the audio podcast for more music and interview.

Pom Pom Squad is the brainchild of musical force Mia Berrin. While the band’s name and imagery might evoke something fun and light, the reality is far darker and much, much heavier. Musically and lyrically, the project falls somewhere between 90’s Liz Phair and modern confessional indie rock like Soccer Mommy and Phoebe Bridgers, but with a good dose more punch in the heavy bits. The band brought their massive energy to Serious Business Music in Brooklyn for this session. Pom Pom Squad’s debut album, Ow, is available now. Listen to the audio podcast for more music and interview.
Skylar Gudasz is a Durham, NC-based musician with a bold and gritty voice. Wintersleep are a Juno Award-winning Canadian indie rock band from Yarmouth, Nova Scotia comprised of Paul Murphy, Loel Campbell, Tim D’Eon, Chris Bell, and Jon Samuel. Well into their third decade of the band, the group has a well-established, rich sound rooted in rock with touches of folk that has kept them sounding fresh and innovative all along. Notably, they pack their extremely hooky songs with poignant lyrics and self-reflective, critical storytelling that brings you in closer on each listen. It was exciting to have them in for this fantastic session at Serious Business Music in Brooklyn. In The Land Of is available now from Dine Alone Records. Vandana is a Brooklyn-based musician, producer, and visual artist with a well-traveled background, from India to London to New York, she’s absorbed a world of influences and inspiration along the way, all of which fuel her bold, dense, and dark electronic pop. With reinventions of Bollywood themes, she crafts stunning, immersive soundworlds with tight grooves and entrancing melodies. She stopped by Serious Business Music in Brooklyn for this intimate solo performance. Contra EP is available now. Listen to the audio podcast for more music and interview.
Nana Grizol is an indie folk band based in Athens, Georgia, fronted by Theo Hilton. Their catchy, earnest songs ride the line between folk-punk and indie rock with often playful synths and horns, all tied together by bouncy rhythms underscoring Hilton’s heart-on-the-sleeve honesty. In this “at home” episode the band performs a socially distanced live performance of the song “Autumn.” South Somewhere Else, will be released on June 26 from Arrowhawk Records and Don Giovanni Records. Listen to the audio podcast for an interview with Theo Hilton.

Jelly Kelly began life as a side project for Monogold frontman Keith Kelly, but quickly grew into its own beast. With a similar musical tendency (the presence of Monogold powerhouse drummer Jared Apuzzo – rototoms and all – probably helps with that) but a different angle that sees Kelly’s vocals opening up for a more full-throated delivery than that falsetto we’ve come to know and love over the years, Jelly Kelly is a young band full of experienced players (Nicolas Dube, Dom Bodo round out the quartet) having fun making weird sounds. The effect is an effortless, cool, catchy blend of post-punky hook-ridden indie rock that doesn’t want to fit neatly in any genre, and we’re here for it. The band dropped by Serious Business Music in Brooklyn to give us a taste of their brand new music. Fresh Paint by Jelly Kelly is available now. Listen to the audio podcast for more music and interview.
Zenizen is the project of Opal Hoyt, whose music reveals her journey from her roots in Alaska through Vermont, Jamaica, Washington DC, and ultimately Brooklyn. With a jazz foundation and soulful expression, the music is captivating and curious, blending styles and textures to great effect. The band joined us at Serious Business Music in Brooklyn for this special session. Es Is is available now. Listen to the audio podcast for more music and interview.

Jump Rope Gazers will be released July 10 from Carpark Records. Listen to the audio podcast for more music and interview.
Arthur Moon is a project led by NY-based musician Lora-Faye Åshuvud, whose boundary-pushing performance and vocals style blends well with an experimental sort of electronic dance music to create a hazy, unsettling, yet inviting take on pop. The band dropped by Serious Business Music in Brooklyn to give us this intimate look at their impeccable song stylings. Arthur Moon’s self-titled LP is available now. Listen to the audio podcast for more music and interview.

proper. is the Brooklyn-based indie rock project led by Erik Garlington. With heavy doses of emo sensitivity and fury, the songs writhe and shake as Garlington spits out an avalanche of expertly crafted, brutally honest lyrics. From the first waves of feedback to the propulsive dance beat and the breakdown that follows just in time for the lyrics to start, we’re hooked immediately. The band stopped by Serious Business Music in Brooklyn to rock for us. I Spent The Winter Writing Songs About Getting Better is available now from Big Scary Monsters. Today’s podcast features a recent conversation between Shana Falana and myself about everything, including life as a house painter, Slow TV’s National Knitting Evening, a chance encounter with young Brad Pitt in Bozeman Montana, Ram Dass and much more. Check out the latest song and video from Shana Falana, called “Everyone Is Gonna Be OK,” along with October 2019’s album Darkest Light, 2016’s Here Comes The Wave, and 2015’s Set Your Lightning Fire Free. Please check out the accompanying video from today’s show, which features a video diary shot by Shana herself.
Shana Falana is one of our favorite dream-pop artists – currently based in Kingston, New York. Shana and Michael Amari explore darkness and light in their almost-meditative songs, which are illuminated by dazzling visual projections at live shows. During quarantine, Shana brought us into her home and daily life to give us a look at what’s happening in her world while live music isn’t happening. Music: “Go Higher” by Shana Falana Darkest Light is available now from Arrowhawk Records. Listen to the audio podcast for more music and interview.
Brooklyn musician Sean Cahill’s band The Next Great American Novelist has been a study in change. Nearly reaching its end when a meeting with Jason Cummings launched the current phase of the reinvigorated project, which blends dreamy, melodic indie rock with hints of sun-kissed pop in a way that feels somewhat more West Coast than Brooklyn in a super refreshing way. The band dropped by Serious Business Music in Brooklyn to brighten up the basement studio for this session. Careless Moon will be the sophomore album from The Next Great American Novelist. Listen to the audio podcast for more music and interview.
Time for The Jazz Hole Live with the wonderful NYC-based, African-infused jazz duo AfuriKo live in Mercedes, Uruguay and Sheffield, England.
Adir L.C. is an NYC-based songwriter with a refreshing, folk-inflected indie rock style that makes great use of dynamics and lush arrangements. With a huge sound that feels both grounded and ambitious thanks to Adir’s warm and comforting vocals, this is music that’s really easy to get lost in. Currently isolating at his home in Brooklyn, Adir invited us in to have some coffee, meet his dog, Moka, and get a taste of some new music in progress. Check out Adir L.C.’s previous appearance on BTR Live Studio here. Basket Star is available now from Birdwatcher Records. Listen to the audio podcast for more music and interview.

With an eclectic musical background spanning the whole world of modern music, from pop to classical and all sorts of experimental, her soprano is impeccably trained and highly adaptable. Here, she delivers an impeccably arranged solo performance with the aid of backing tracks and loops supporting her otherworldly vocals. Angels On The Slope is available now from Luminelle Recordings. Pocket Protector began as the solo project of Brooklyn indie scene veteran Joe Reichel (Howth, Robot Princess, MiniBoone) before the addition of drummer (and Brooklyn Drum Collective creator) Carlo Minchillo and bassist/photographer Mike Petzinger (of Meansiders). Reichel’s hooky, melodic songs and honest lyrics take the best of punk and indie rock to make for a catchy good time. Room On Pacific is available now. Listen to the audio podcast for more music and interview.
Brooklyn-based duo True Dreams are a wickedly fun and raw tag team of “cheerleader punx” songwriters who go right for the throat with their snotty anthems. Don’t be fooled by the cuteness of their gimmicky onstage patty cake (it’s awesome tho) – they absolutely mean business and will FUCK YOU UP. They’re sloppy and fun and silly and totally serious and if you disagree, well, whatever. Angela Carlucci  plays guitar and sings, and Hannah Nichols plays drums and sings, and we were so psyched to have them join us at Serious Business Music in Brooklyn for this super fun session. No. 1 is out now from King Pizza Records.
Matt Longo is Thin Lear, joined by an extensive, rotating cast of talented musicians. With rich, dynamic, and thoughtful indie rock – moving from thoughtful minimalist folk to epic, artful rock, Thin Lear has been neatly developing its sound and craft for most of this decade with a slew of releases. For this session, Longo and the band – in this case Tom DiCarlo (upright bass), Yaniv Taubenhouse (keyboard), and Jerad Lippi (drums) dropped by Serious Business Music in Brooklyn to give us this preview of the upcoming album. Wooden Cave will be released July 24th from Egghunt Records.

Field Mouse have been a favorite band here at BTRtoday for several years now – while much has changed for the band (members, cities, styles of music) what’s still maintained all this time is the massively enjoyable musical chemistry stemming from Rachel Browne’s sweet vocals and Andrew Futral’s wily guitar antics. The addition of Zoe Browne on vocals adds a layer of perfect harmonies that only siblings can produce in just that way, rounded out by a super tight rhythm section, the band is operating to its full potential these days, with perfectly hooky, emotional songs that we just can’t get enough of. They joined us at Serious Business Music in Brooklyn for this session. Meaning by Field Mouse is available now from Topshelf Records. Listen to the audio podcast for more music and interview.
Gold Dime is the project of drummer/vocalist Andrya Ambro, who we first encountered as part of the amazing duo Talk Normal several years ago. These days, along with Ian Douglas-Moore and Brendan Winick, Ambro drives the propulsive, disjointed post-punk grooves of this project with her impressively relentless and unique drum technique – all while delivering an impressively strong lead vocal. The trio dropped by Serious Business Music in Brooklyn to show us how they pull their huge sound together live. My House is out now from Fire Talk Records.
Realworld are the product of a lifetime of consuming the best of 90’s pop-rock culture – party jams, MTV, sweet style, and totally rad attitude fueling their honest, nostalgic tunes. The band dropped by Serious Business Music in Brooklyn to remind us how to really party.   “Get Busy” is the latest single from Realworld.

The music of Maneka – the sonically-eclectic project of guitarist Devin McKnight, also of the band Speedy Ortiz – draws on a multitude of influences in an attempt to reflect McKnight’s unique cultural perspective as a person of color in an overwhelmingly white-dominated music scene. With rejection of any thoughts of genre pigeonholing – though post-punk might be the broadest that usually applies one way or another – Maneka swerves from sound to sound and emotion to emotion in an impressive blend of creative songwriting. The band stopped by Serious Business Music in Brooklyn to show us how it all comes together. Devin by Maneka is available now from Exploding In Sound. Today’s live set on The Jazz Hole Live is by the NY-based Thai pianist/composer Kengchakaj and comes to us from Rockwood Music Hall
It’s been a few years since last we saw Parlor Walls here at BTR Live Studio. In that time, the band has trimmed back to a duo (guitarist/vocalist/force of nature Alyse Lamb and drummer/magician/synth dark lord Chris Mulligan), focusing their awesome power on a seething, pulsating, and even more stunning sort of post-punk/art rock. The band dropped by Serious Business Music ahead of the release of their latest record for an intense session. Watch this one closely. Heavy Tongue by Parlor Walls is available now from Famous Swords.

A longtime BTR Live Studio favorite, Workman Song has been an ever-evolving project showcasing the songwriting of Sean McMahon, whose rich and bold-hearted folk music is as timeless as it is unconventional. This time around, McMahon performed solo for us at Serious Business Music in Brooklyn to give us a taste of some of his latest work. “Ragnarok” is the latest single out now from Workman Song. Listen to the audio podcast for more music and interview.

Big Bend is the experimental musical project of Ohio-born, NYC-based composer Nathan Phillps. With a focus on collaboration and clever use of improvised electronics as a base for his songwriting, Phillips weaves intricate, otherworldly sounds together beautifully. Joined here by Craig Schenker on saxophone and with an overhead projector on-hand for some appropriate visual aids, Big Bend brings their expansive, amorphous sound to Serious Business Music in Brooklyn. Radish by Big Bend is available now. Listen to the audio podcast for more music and interview.
Shadow Monster is the Bushwick, Brooklyn-based duo of Gillian Visco and John Swanson who play a potent sort of grunge-inflected indie rock. With heavy lyrical themes dealing with loss, depression, and isolation, there’s a tension just under the surface of their music that explodes into a cathartic big-riffed, hair-whipping frenzy. The band dropped by Serious Business Music to give us a taste of their awesomeness in this session. Punching Bag is out now from Dadstache Records. AMES, aka Amy Kuney’s songwriting is familiar to so many people – though they may not realize it, since the LA-based musician has spent years crafting hit compositions for the likes of Michelle Branch, Kelly Clarkson, Icona Pop, and more. AMES has an incredible voice of her own – which is showcased prominently on her EP – and she stopped by Serious Business Music in Brooklyn to share it with us in this intimate solo session. My Names Is AMES is available now from Mateo Sound. Listen to the audio podcast for more music and interview.

NYC band Activity is a supergroup of sorts, with Travis Johnson, Steve Levine, Zoë Browne, and Jess Rees coming from the excellent bands Grooms, Field Mouse, and Russian Baths. This particular combination ties together some of the best and darkest elements of those groups in a caustic blend of equal parts nervous breakdown and blissful catharsis. Ahead of their release, the band dropped by Serious Business Music in Brooklyn to give us a taste of their music. Unmask Whoever, the debut album from Activity, will be release March 27, 2020 by Western Vinyl.

The core of LA indie/alt band Momma is dual guitarist/vocalists Etta Friedman and Allegra Weingarten. With super catchy and fun verse-chorus-verse reminiscent of some of our favorite 90’s act, the band’s new music picks up where their previous album (which we loved here at BTRtoday!) left off and makes it bigger, brighter, and even hookier. They dropped by Serious Business Music in Brooklyn to give us a taste of some of their new tunes in this very special session! Two Of Me will be released June 5 from Danger Collective Records. Ida Mae is the Nashville-based duo of Chris Turpin and Stephanie Jean, who are originally from the UK. The musical and romantic partners developed the project in the wake of their previous band, taking inspiration from the Sonny Terry and Brownie McGhee song, “Ida Mae” as they forged a new musical path. Their powerful blend of guitar and voice uses a strong sense of melody and pop structure, making for a refreshing mix of British soul and Americana. The duo stopped by while on tour with Greta Van Fleet to share this intimate look at their tunes with us at Serious Business Music in Brooklyn. Ida Mae’s debut album, Chasing Lights, is available now from Thirty Tigers. Listen to the audio podcast for more music and interview.

ESSi is a Brooklyn-based duo with a deceptively huge sound. Using a smart blend of noise and hooky post-punk to achieve mind-melting dynamics, Jessica Ackerley and Rick Daniel draw equally from ambient experimental music and pop as they do from the more unlistenable far reaches of skronk (though, thankfully, there’s a satisfyingly steady dose of that in the mix as well to shake things up). Their music rides the dark line between groove and caustic disorientation, in a way that’s welcome for its willingness to truly experiment with what can go into a song. The band dropped by Serious Business Music in Brooklyn for this super exciting session! Vital Creatures is available now from Ramp Local. Listen to the audio podcast for more music and interview.

The Joy Formidable is a Welsh alternative rock band currently based in London, whose dynamic songwriting and epic performances have made quite a mark over the band’s decade plus history. Now, in celebration of the 10th anniversary of their landmark debut record, A Balloon Called Moaning, the group has reissued that album with an additional version featuring Welsh versions of all 8 songs. Here, the band shares an intimate performance which, while a bit quieter and more acoustic than fans may be used to, shows no less power than their fully amped up shows. A Balloon Called Moaning (10th Anniversary Edition) is available now.

We’ve got some really great new ones for you this week—so, tune-in, close your eyes and let the music take over.
Pom Pom Squad is the brainchild of musical force Mia Berrin. While the band’s name and imagery might evoke something fun and light, the reality is far darker and much, much heavier. Musically and lyrically, the project falls somewhere between 90’s Liz Phair and \ modern confessional indie rock like Soccer Mommy and Phoebe Bridgers, but with a good dose more punch in the heavy bits. The band brought their massive energy to Serious Business Music in Brooklyn for this session. Pom Pom Squad’s debut album, Ow, is available now.

Josie Boivin is a Montreal-based musician who records under the name MUNYA. With pristine production, tasteful live instrumentation, and an impossibly gorgeous vocal delivery, MUNYA’s music is a sort of familiar-yet-otherworldy indie pop, built on chill beat and synths with shades of French pop sweetening it all up just enough. Josie brought her one-woman performance to Serious Business Music for this special look at her tunes. MUNYA’s self-titled LP is available now from Luminelle. Dave Monks – best known as the bandleader of Canadian indie rock band Tokyo Police Club – doesn’t waste any time. For the past several years, he’s used the downtime from TPC to work on his solo music with a focus on his voice and acoustic guitar, resulting in his first solo full length being released just ahead of a new record from his other band. Here, he presents a stripped-down taste of some of his newest tunes, accompanied by Alyson McNamara, at Serious Business Music in Brooklyn. Dave Monks’ first solo LP, On A Wave, is available now from Dine Alone Records. Listen to the audio podcast for more music and interview.

ing is an experimental rock band from Richmond, VA comprised of Hannah, Will, and Garen. Employing the distinct – and sonically unusual for a band playing any sort of rock music – technique of playing only single notes and not chords, the band has a unique sound and feel, more akin to jazz or progressive, technical music than rock n’ roll, even though their structures ten to follow a somewhat traditional pop template. They dropped by Serious Business Music in Brooklyn to blow our minds with their skills. self titled by ing is available now from Citrus City Records. Diane Coffee – aka the pop alter-ego of Bloomington, IN musician Shaun Fleming – has transformed since we first encountered the experimental, shape-shifting project a few years ago.

Pearla – the musical project of Brooklyn songwriter Nicole Rodriguez – is an amorphous sort of endeavor, with sounds drawing on folk, americana, and pop, all with a hazy cloud around it, and Rodriguez’s powerful vocals floating in and around the melodies. THICK headlined Rough Trade in Brooklyn and a wild time was had by all.
Onesie is the Brooklyn power pop band based around the songwriting of Ben Haberland, along with Zack Fanelli, Lee Madaus, and Andrew Nelson. With heavy nods to British invasion, power pop, and 90’s alt-rock, Haberland embraces everything great about catchy guitar rock and melody in his songwriting. The band dropped by Serious Business Music in Brooklyn to shred for us in this session. Umpteenth is available now from Dadstache Records. Listen to the audio podcast for more music and interview.
Why not play punk they way it’s supposed to be played—with zero f*cks.

It’s been a few years since Pittsburgh songwriter Brooke Annibale stopped by our studio for a session. In that time, her sound has continued to grow and evolve – holding onto that timeless quality we’ve always loved while introducing some fresh elements to keep things exciting.
