The Thursday Mix for December 11, 2014. Part 1 of the Best of 2014. Lottie@btrtoday.com
This week on BTR is dedicated to one of my other passions: cooking! (And, of course, eating…) Food + fashion go hand in hand for many reasons, and no one knows that better than this week’s guest, chef-turned-designer Alex McCrery. After more than 17 years working in the food industry, Alex became dissatisfied with the frumpy uniform options available to professional chefs. His personal frustration led to research, which ultimately led to the creation of a new, uniquely stylish label of cooking garments called Tilit Chef Goods. On today’s show, Alex talks about his Southern-meets-Italian cooking background, what led to the launch of Tilit, the aesthetic he aims to offer through the label, a few of his own fashion and food favorites, and more. Plus, a decadent playlist of tracks including a song off the brand new album from Wilco’s Jeff Tweedy and his son Spencer, along with music from Tijuana Panthers, Arc Iris, and New Orleans’ Generationals. So grab your cast iron pan and follow a new recipe for fashion, with Sew & Tell on BreakThru Radio!

From Lady Gaga to Jennifer Lawrence to Target swimsuit models, fashion industry Photoshop practices have been getting a lot of heat lately for hyper-alterations that render beautiful and accomplished women into plasticized Barbies. Kara Eschbach and Janet Sahm, co-founders of a revolutionary new women’s publication called Verily, decided to tackle the issue by taking action. Verily offers women a more holistic, well-rounded reflection of lifestyle, fashion, and relationship editorial - one that the Verily team aim to make a true representation of women’s beauty and diversity. On today’s show, you’ll hear from Kara Eschbach about how Verily grew from conversations over coffee to a full-team publication, how the magazine’s no-Photoshop policy evolved, some of the challenges they’ve faced as they attempt to change the industry from within, their new vision for Verily, and more. Plus, a playlist full of tracks from great new releases, including debut albums from New Bums and Sisyphus, as well as the latest from The War on Drugs, Fenster, and more. So stick around for some refreshingly honest fashion, right here with Sew & Tell on BreakThru Radio!

Very, very excited to have DEATH on the show for the first time ever today! They're a black Detroit punk band from the 70s, who were shaping the Detroit sound with the MC5 before Iggy and the Stooges. So it's a real honor to play their music on the show today. And as always, make sure to follow BTR on Facebook, Twitter, tumblr, Pinterest, Instagram, and SoundCloud.
Today I talk about and play music from Saintseneca, Lee (asano+ryuhei) and Zula
