The weather in New York this week was absolutely awful!! Rain, rain, and more rain! That’s why I’m starting today’s show off with a sunny song about warm temperatures. And it only heats up from there! We’ve got Terry Malts, Mr. Dream, and Speech Debelle to keep things rolling on the show today. And don’t forget to check out BTR on Facebook, Twitter, tumblr, Pinterest, Instagram, and SoundCloud!
What if I told you about a tough, durable, stylish sneaker that’s made of… paper? Sounds impossible, right? This week’s guest, Steven Weinreb, is the founder and CEO of Civic Duty, a new line of footwear made from Tyvek. Tyvek is a recyclable plastic-based fiber with the texture of paper that’s remarkably resilient and water-resistant, making it an overlooked but ideal textile for garment design. On today’s show, Steven will talk about what triggered his idea to create shoes from Tyvek, the process of creating a viable prototype, the unique properties that make Tyvek a perfect fit for shoes, the challenges of launching and building Civic Duty, some of the ways Civic Duty is giving back, and more. Plus, a playlist full of great indie releases from this year, including Christopher Denny, Hiss Golden Messenger, Zeus, and Electric Youth. So join us for some true fashion innovation here on BreakThru Radio!

Happy September Saturday!  I hope everyone out there has been enjoying the sweater weather- I know I am.  There’s nothing better than being able to wear something snuggly AND get away with open toed shoes.  If you need your early fall perfectly soundtracked, then BTR is the sweater/sandals music combo you’ve been looking for!  We’ve got amazing new stuff on the show today from a Swedish band named Goat, an Irish band named So Cow, and a Canadian man named, of course, Moonface.  Stay tuned to check it all out!

Today on Sew & Tell, I am delighted to bring you a great interview with Emily Spivack, author of the newly published Worn Stories and curator of the project Sentimental Value. Both focus on the deeply personal relationship that people have with clothing – the emotional connections, stories, and significance that form our attachments to what we wear. When I spoke with Emily two years ago, the two projects were documented primarily as blogs; now, Emily has created a beautiful selection of 67 narratives recorded in the Worn Stories book, and her Sentimental Value collection is on display in art exhibits throughout the country. I had a chance to catch up with her this week and in today’s follow-up interview, you’ll hear from Emily about the growth of development of these two projects, some of the things she’s learned and observed through her work about emotional connections to clothing, her own “happiest garment,” and more. Plus, I’ve got a great, emotive playlist for you including brand new music from Electric Youth, Holy Ghost Tent Revival, Slow Club, and Sloan, along with tracks off the latest from Little Lapin, Sean Rowe, and Christopher Denny. So join us for a moving hour of fashion, music, and emotion, right here on BreakThru Radio!
This week, The Hash celebrates its birthday with a special look at the past year of shows.

In the youth-obsessed culture of fashion media, where can the more mature sartorial eye turn for age-appropriate inspiration? While resources are still few and far between, bloggers like David Evans of Grey Fox are slowly changing the landscape of style to accommodate its significant older demographic, giving them an opportunity to see themselves reflected in contemporary fashion. On today’s show, David joins me to talk about the foundation and growth of Grey Fox, Britain’s growing Made in the UK movement, a few style guidelines that will help older men to look and feel their best, some of his favorite accessories, a few Grey Fox fashion icons, and more. Plus, I’ve got a brand new single off the much-anticipated September debut from Toronto duo Electric Youth and a preview of next week’s album release from Brooklyn’s Bear In Heaven, along with tracks from Ages and Ages, Dinowalrus, Dead Stars, and The Trouble with Templeton. So join us for an hour of fashion that proves older is not only wiser, but more stylish!
