Within the first twenty seconds of Watchmen, director Zach Snyder introduces a great idea for police fatal shootings. At the end, though, for the sake of dramatic tension rendering it impractical.
An example of this conformist dystopian future is the film Watchmen.
It seems the relationship between modern police and the public is strained. The author explores this interesting topic, sharing thoughts on why cop shows tend to depict liberal decision-making policies as getting in the way of solving crimes. Ultimately, the article indicates that the possibilities for narratives about contemporary reality are very exciting.
In their portrayal of cops, Watchmen bends towards fascism. It is a widely established theme in the original horror series as it masks the perils of nuclear war with Cold War-era fear and parallels politically motivated dread seen today.
Watchmen positions itself as a critique of American politics, with images that follow police shoot-outs, white supremacy, and more. With an often-cited example, the scene at a police headquarters includes portraits of recent U.S. presidents, including current president Robert Redford who has held office for decades.
With the lengths it goes to, making everything as detailed as possible, it’s disappointing that ‘Watchmen’ leans more towards fascism.
“Watchmen” mishandles its portrayal of cops, prioritizing one-sided violence over the realities faced by people on the ground. The show would’ve missed its opportunity to examine fascism in society if it had correctly incorporated gun laws and police oversight.
‘Watchmen’ defies popular notions of what would happen in an inherently exploitative environment. Cops are the beacon of righteousness in this dystopic world where vigilantes roam freely. We see officers getting down on their knees, engrossed in tender moments with loved ones at home. Similarly, the show never portrays the cops as villains; they’re given that status by an apathetic public who can’t see past white supremacy. The show’s sympathy lies with the police force while dirty deeds like
“Watchmen” depicts the police in a bender towards fascism which is fascinating and makes you want to keep watching. The show portrays a largely black police force battling white supremacy terrorists which makes it seem like they’re fighting for justice and good over evil, but that melts away into the blue lives matter message the cops are instead fighting for.
