Last night in Brooklyn, BTRtoday stepped back into the festival game with a dream lineup for our Northside Festival showcase at the Knitting Factory.
The night starting off with buzzy Aussie band The Goon Sax, who are visiting the U.S. for the first time as they promote their widely loved new album, We’re Not Talking. The Kingston, NY-based Team Love recording artist Shana Falana, has gotten a ton of love here at BTRtoday. We were right to love them; they brought a huge sound, super positive vibe and great songs to the show.
Headliner Lou Barlow took the stage armed with an acoustic guitar and two ukuleles. While his work with Dinosaur, Jr and Sebadoh hit top volumes, his set was an intimate affair that almost felt like a VH1 Storytellers performance. Barlow weaved through his extensive catalog, from his earliest songs to his latest (thanks to the dude who demanded to hear something from 2016’s Apocalypse Fetish, we heard “Anniversary Song”). Between songs, he talked about his relationship with Elliot Smith, how he ended up with a Government Issue sticker on his uke, and other tales from his life before the generous set culminated with one of the best songs ever written, “Brand New Love.”
The 10th annual Northside Festival continues through Sunday, June 10. Check their site for more info and the full schedule of events.
