Tune Up: Bleeding Knees Club

by Elena Childers | Music | Apr 21, 2017

If you haven’t already heard of Bleeding Knees Club, then you’re missing out. They are an Australian garage, pop-punk band that will rock your world!

The band’s last releases were in 2012, and they have been on somewhat of a hiatus since then. During their time off the members worked on other music projects and artistic endeavors, however, Bleeding Knees Club has risen from the dead and are back with a vengeance!

The lineup has gone through several changes since its inception, but is now comprised of Aussie hoodlums Alex Wall (vocals/guitar), Gio Alexander (bass), Mickey Barker (guitar), and Nick Leighton (drums).

Just last week they released their brand new EP Chew The Gum. It is filled with melodic tracks that’ll severely get caught in your head and make you wanna say, “fuck it!” Compared to their older material, like their EP Virginity from 2011 (which was more garage and had that home-recorded feel to it), Chew The Gum is an obvious attempt to try new things and experiment with their skills, and it’s really working!

But don’t let that fool you—this album still reflects the chaotic, I-don’t-give-a-fuck attitude of the guys in Bleeding Knees Club.

They also recently released a wrestling inspired music video for the album’s title track. Apparently, the visuals don’t really have anything to do with the content of the song, but it makes for one killer video.

BTRtoday had a fun chat with original Bleeding Knees Club member Alex Wall about the band, their new music, and (unintentionally) Panic! At The Disco …

BTRtoday (BTR): How did you guys meet and decide to form Bleeding Knees Club?

Alex Wall (AW): I met the guys at a farmer’s market, we all were buying zucchini. I thought that if we all have that much in common, we would most likely have the same music taste. So we started playing together every Sunday after the markets, and here we are.

BTR: You guys kind of took a lengthy hiatus, what were you all up to during that time?

AW: I was living in New York for a while. I also released a few solo albums and toured a bunch around the US, Europe and Japan playing the songs from those solo records.

BTR: Why the name Bleeding Knees Club?

AW: Panic! At The Disco was taken.

BTR: Tell me a little about this new song “Chew The Gum”–what was the inspiration behind it, and what was the creative process in making the video?

AW: The song is about overindulging in things that are nice and fun too much, to the point that they are no longer fun or nice. Kind of like a hangover. The video has nothing to do with the song. I just had met this wrestling guy out and about one night and wanted to use him in a video because I thought it would be cool.

BTR: What are you guys currently working on?

AW: We are currently rehearsing for our tour in May. I’m also slowly writing an album. Maybe a novel or a Bible, too.

BTR: How does your new material compare to your older stuff, like to the Virginity EP?

AW: It’s less blues and doo-wop influenced. It’s also a bit more heavy and punk, I guess. Also, It wasn’t recorded in a shoe shop like that first EP was.

BTR: Are any of you guys in other music projects? If so, how do they compare to The Bleeding Knees Club?

AW: Yeah, I have a solo thing called Wax Witches, Nick has a band called Nick Nuisance & The Delinquents, Gio has a band called Neighbourhood Void and Michael has a band called Dying Adolescence. They are all totally different, but all good.

BTR: What’s an album you could not live without?

AW: Mort Garson, “Plantasia“. Got to grow my plants.

BTR: Can you paint a picture of how your live shows tend to be?

AW: It’s a lot like that guy who climbed the Trump Tower with suction cups.

BTR: What’s the music scene in Australia like for you guys?

AW: There are a lot of rad bands coming out of Australia at the moment. I don’t know if we are in the scene so i’m not sure what it’s like for us. We are kind of lone rangers.

BTR: I see you guys are doing an AU tour–what are you most excited for during this tour?

AW: I’m excited to go to Hobart and climb that big mountain they have there. And maybe eat some seafood.

BTR: What’s in store for the future of Bleeding Knees Club?

AW: Hopefully a Grammy.
